Jesus Clears the Record // Pastor Joshua Sherron

Mark presents a man whose body carried leprosy, but whose whole life carried the label, “Unclean.” The text shows that his condition was not just skin deep. Leprosy pushed him out of family, community, worship, and ordinary human touch. The label made him feel unwanted, unworthy, and untouchable, just like the labels people put on others when they do not know the pain behind the person.

Jesus meets the man at the point of his deepest need. The leper does not come with a fake heart or a cleaned-up story. The leper comes on his knees, begging, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” His cry shows faith because he does not question Christ’s power. His question is, “Will you?” Desperation brings him close to Jesus, and faith refuses to let fear cloud what Christ is able to do.

Jesus responds with compassion. His hand, the hand that made heaven and earth, reaches toward the man everybody else avoided. Christ touches what society had pushed aside. Christ says, “I am willing. Be cleansed,” and immediately the leprosy leaves. The text gives no human formula, no waiting period, no soap, bleach, or medicine that could do what Christ’s word does. Jesus cleanses what human power cannot cleanse, because when Jesus steps into a situation, the condition has to move.

Jesus then sends the healed man to the priest. The priest does not heal the man, but the priest verifies what Jesus has done. The cleansing is personal, but the restoration becomes public. The same people who knew the man’s old condition now have evidence of his new condition. Yesterday he was unclean, but today he is clean. Yesterday he was isolated, but today he is restored. Yesterday he was rejected, but today he is accepted.

Jesus clears records that people refuse to forget. His grace washes the stain of sin, His mercy restores the broken places, and His power cleans shame out of the heart. People may remember the mess, the addiction, the rejection, the brokenness, or the past, but people do not get the last word. Jesus gets the last word. When Jesus says clean, the record is cleared. When Jesus says forgiven, the guilt does not have authority anymore. When Jesus says restored, the label cannot define the life again.
