Bible ReadingJohn 6:1-14 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, "Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?" He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, "This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!"

[46:07] [47:41]Psalm 139:1-4 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.
[01:10:18]John 6:26 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves."
[48:45] [49:05]John 6:32 Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven."
[48:45] [49:32]John 6:47 "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life."
[48:45] [50:00]John 6:53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you."
[48:45] [50:13]Observation questions- In John 6:1-14, what different responses do Philip, Andrew, and Jesus have to the problem of feeding the crowd? [01:08:28]
- What details in John 6 show that the meal was not barely enough, but more than enough? [01:16:03]
- According to John 20:30-31, why does John say these signs were written down? [47:41]
- In John 6, what are the four “truly, truly” sayings, and what subjects do they each address? [48:45]
Interpretation questions- John says every sign points to Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. How does the feeding of the 5,000 do more than show power—how does it reveal who Jesus is? [48:01]
- John mentions that the Passover was near. Why might that detail matter for understanding Jesus in this chapter, especially as the true bread and the Lamb of God? [01:04:18]
- Jesus tested Philip even though he already knew what he would do. What does that suggest about why the Lord sometimes lets his people feel the weight of an impossible situation before he provides? [01:17:00]
- Jesus says, “whoever believes has eternal life,” and later speaks about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. How do these sayings help explain that receiving life from Christ is deeper than mere interest in miracles or physical bread? [50:13]
Application questions- “Amen” means real agreement with what God has said. Are there words of Christ that are easy to say “amen” to, but harder to truly receive and obey in daily life? Where is that struggle showing up right now? [41:48]
- Jesus knew what he would do before Philip had any answer. What perplexing situation in life feels bigger than personal wisdom, money, or strength right now? How might remembering that Jesus already knows change the way that situation is being faced? [01:10:18]
- Philip saw the cost, and Andrew saw how small the resources were. Which response feels more familiar right now: focusing on the impossibility, or focusing on how little is in hand? Why? [01:09:06]
- A little boy’s lunch looked insignificant, yet Jesus used it. What small gift, simple act of obedience, or limited resource has seemed too small to matter? What might it look like to place that in Christ’s hands instead of dismissing it? [01:14:30]
- Jesus had the people sit down before the disciples could see what he was about to do. Is there an area of life where obedience is being delayed until there is more explanation? What would trusting first look like there? [01:15:10]
- The feeding of the crowd trained the disciples for days when Jesus would no longer be physically with them. Looking back, can anyone identify a hard season that became a classroom for deeper dependence on Christ? What was learned there? [01:17:00]
- Some people sought Jesus because they had eaten and were filled. When faith grows dull, is there a tendency to seek Christ mainly for relief, help, or provision, rather than for Christ himself? How can the heart be re-centered on him as the true bread of life? [49:05]
