Because of Jesus, We’re Better Off Together

Ephesians 2 keeps putting the church face to face with who believers were outside of Christ and who they have become inside of Christ. The kingdom transfer is real: Jesus gives a new walk, a new identity, and a new King. The text refuses to let anybody act entitled or spoiled, because sinners were dead in trespasses and sin, outsiders, without hope, without help, and living apart from Christ.

God changes everything through two game changing words: “but God.” Sin broke the relationship with God, and human effort could not fix the mess. Christ became flesh, stepped into brokenness, laid down His life as the propitiation for sin, rose again, and did what sinners could never do for themselves. Jesus, and only Jesus, gives new life. Baptism, denominationalism, good works, and religious activity cannot make anybody right with God.

Ephesians 2:13 brings another praise break: “but now.” Those who were far from God have been brought near through the blood of Christ. Christ does not merely pull people out of sin. Christ brings people into a family. The church is not a building with four walls and a roof. The church is a living, breathing people of God, brothers and sisters who belong to Christ and belong to one another.

Christ Himself is peace. Peace is more than a feeling or an emotion. Peace is a Person, and His name is Jesus. Christ’s presence gives believers godfidence in the middle of storms, because the Father has promised never to leave or forsake His children. The storm may still rage, and circumstances may still stink, but Christ remains the Prince of Peace.

Christ also tears down walls of hostility between people groups. Jews and Gentiles become one new people through the cross. The local church is meant to be a little bit of heaven on earth, where politics, preferences, backgrounds, opinions, and arguments do not matter more than brothers and sisters redeemed by the same blood. Unity does not mean perfection, but it does mean fighting for one another, speaking truth in love, and building one another up.

The gospel calls for more than correct theology. Satan believes true facts about Jesus but rejects Christ and refuses to bow. Faith crosses the line from merely believing facts to accepting Christ with an open heart, repentance, surrender, and a real relationship. Christ welcomes all who come to the Father through Him.
