Jesus desires for His people to reflect the perfect unity of the triune God. This unity is not achieved by mere proximity or shared interests, but by each heart being individually tuned to the standard of Christ and His truth. As believers fix their eyes on Him and the gospel, they are drawn closer to one another, just as pianos tuned to the same fork are in harmony with each other. This profound oneness is a testimony to the world of God's love and power. [01:01:05]
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:20-21 ESV)
Reflection: As you consider your daily routines this week, what is one practical way you can intentionally "tune your heart" to Christ, rather than to the noise of the world, to foster deeper gospel unity with other believers?
The joy that Jesus offers is not dependent on favorable circumstances but is anchored in the eternal hope of the gospel. This is the same profound joy that enabled Him to endure the cross, founded on the Father's perfect pleasure and eternal purposes. This joy becomes our strength, allowing us to say "it is well" even in the midst of deep loss and confusion, because our ultimate satisfaction is found in Christ alone. [01:07:40]
“But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.” (John 17:13 ESV)
Reflection: Where have you been seeking a sense of happiness or fulfillment that is ultimately circumstantial, and how might you shift your focus to find your deepest joy in your unchanging relationship with Christ?
Believers are not removed from a world that often opposes them, but are kept and protected by God for a purpose. This divine protection is necessary because a spiritual battle rages daily, with an enemy who seeks to devour. Yet, God has a glorious intention for His children to remain: that through their lives, others would see His goodness and give Him glory, whether in everyday tasks or in enduring trials. [01:18:11]
“I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.” (John 17:15 ESV)
Reflection: In which specific area of your life this week do you most need to consciously "put on the full armor of God" to stand firm against spiritual opposition and fulfill God's purpose for you there?
The process of becoming more like Christ is a lifelong journey of sanctification, and God's Word is the primary means by which this transformation happens. Scripture is breathed out by God and is essential for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness. A deep, daily commitment to feeding on the truth of God's Word equips believers for every good work and guards them from spiritual starvation. [01:26:12]
“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” (John 17:17 ESV)
Reflection: What is one habit you could establish or strengthen this week to ensure you are consistently being fed and transformed by the truth of God's Word, rather than merely relying on Sunday sermons?
The church is sent into the world with a urgent mission: to proclaim the gospel so that others may find eternal life in Christ. This mission is not conditional on life's circumstances and does not pause during seasons of transition or difficulty. Every believer is a sent one, and distractions from this core purpose often come from the enemy who hates to see the lost saved. The call remains to make Jesus known until He returns. [01:34:16]
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word... so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” (John 17:20-21 ESV)
Reflection: Who is one person in your sphere of influence that God might be prompting you to intentionally pray for and look for an opportunity to share the hope of the gospel with this week?
John 17 supplies a focused set of unchanging desires for Christ’s people. The high-priestly prayer calls believers to gospel unity: those given to Christ remain kept in the Father’s name so that the church may reflect the eternal unity of the triune God. Joy formed in Christ serves as the believer’s strength; Jesus prays that his joy would be fulfilled in his people, showing that obedience and abiding in him produce deep, durable joy that outlasts circumstances. The prayer asks not for escape from the world but for spiritual protection within it—God’s people remain in a hostile environment so their faithful witness can glorify God while they are kept from the evil one. Sanctification proceeds through the truth of Scripture; believers grow in Christlikeness as God’s word shapes teaching, correction, and training in righteousness. The church receives a mission: to be sent into the world so others might hear, believe, and live—evangelism and discipleship remain urgent, active duties until Christ’s return. Finally, Christ’s longing to be with his people drives daily priorities; a passionate desire for union with Jesus should tune hearts to heavenly things, fuel obedience, sustain warfare, and keep the mission alive. These six themes—unity, joy, protection, sanctification, mission, and longing for home—function as a practical roadmap for individual life and congregational direction. Each theme ties back to Christ’s intercession and ongoing work from the Father’s right hand: salvation continues as present keeping, and grace equips the church to stand in spiritual warfare, pursue holiness by Scripture, and proclaim the gospel. The text insists that life’s unpredictable “box of chocolates” will contain both delights and disappointments, yet the Christian’s call does not pause for trouble. Instead, believers should tune daily hearts to Christ, put on the whole armor of God, feast on Scripture, obey his commands, and go where the lost are so that the church displays God’s glory now and longs to be with Christ forever.
I was sharing this picture that that that that I envisioned to to our Wednesday prayer that when we sit, it's almost like Satan has this, like, file or folder of of evidence, and he throws it down in front of us and says, you're guilty. I have the evidence. And it's as if Jesus, our high priest, comes, looks at it, and throws it away and says, it's already been paid in full. Every single day, that is what Jesus is doing for us, and that is why we cannot lose our salvation.

Has it ever occurred to you that if you have a 100 pianos, that they're all tuning to the same standard, the same fork, they're automatically tuned to one another. They are of one accord by being tuned not to each other, but to one to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So a 100 worshipers or in in our case, maybe sixty, seventy worshipers gathering together, each one looking away to Christ, in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be.

But Christian joy is not like that, is it? Because Christian joy is anchored in eternal hope. It's anchored in eternal peace, anchored in eternal life in Jesus Christ. Nehemiah eight ten says, it's the joy of the Lord that is our strength. So that even for a servant like Job, he can go through just terrible circumstances, yet still at the same time say, Lord, you give and you take away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Could it be that God has a greater purpose for all of us who are still here? As we read his word, we find the answer is yes. God has purposed his children to remain in this world even though the world hates us because it brings them glory. First Corinthians ten thirty one, it says whatever you do, whether you eat or drink, do it all for the glory of God. And so believers, brothers and sisters, and watermark church, God has not taken any of us home yet until the appointed time because he still has a plan and a purpose for every one of us to give glory to God while we're still on this earth.

We unify greater and deeper as each and every one of us seeks the Lord, seeks things that are above us. As our hearts have greater and deeper fellowship with Jesus, we are tuned to him just like all those pianos tuning to the same standard, that same tuning fork, and that results in greater unity with one another. Let me ask you this. When you wake up each day, even this morning, what was your heart tuning to?

Think about this. Jesus was the most joyful human being to have ever lived at all times, all places. The moment that he was born, that first cry as a baby, it was a cry of joy. All the way till his last cry on the cross, it was a cry of joy. The joy of Christ that is given to every believer is so profound. Why? Because as as MacArthur had said earlier, it is it's not tied to momentary circumstances.

Are you seeking your ultimate joy even in things like your family, your spouse, your your kids, your jobs? All of that will disappoint you, but not Jesus. And if you notice in verse 13 that we just read, it says that whose joy is just that my joy, Jesus' joy, be fulfilled, will be complete, will abound in you. This is the very reason why Jesus came, isn't it? John ten ten. I came to give life and life abundantly.

Remember that even though his disciples, just moments after praying his prayer with them, they would all deny and and and abandon and and reject Jesus. Yet Jesus was so sure that those whom the father has redeemed and given to Jesus would be securely kept in his hands. What an amazing comforting thing. John ten twenty nine reminds us the same thing. Jesus says, my father who has given them, including you, to me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hands.
