1) "Who would have thought this is where we'd be today? Time certainly flies by, doesn't it? You never believe your parents when they say time goes quickly, but God has been very, very good every step of the way. From the very first time Sean and I drove. I'll get better for the second service, won't I? Okay. Passed the welcome to Percival sign. Until today, Percival Baptist Church has loved and supported us through any and everything. You've helped us raise two great children, who love the Lord and proclaim His name everywhere they go. You brought meals and supported me during my knee replacement surgery. You've prayed for, you've supported me, And rallied around us, as Shawn battled cancer, not once, but twice, and it's now cancer-free."

2) "Jephthah was living during a time when Israel was heavily influenced by the surrounding nations and their gods. We see that. Some of those nations did practice child sacrifice to appease their gods. We know God doesn't condone murder, in any form or fashion. Jephthah proved he knew scripture from when he already corrected the Ammonites, so it would be safe to assume he knew God's commandment of thou shalt not kill. However, he was not keeping good company. Verse 3, if you remember from last week, it says he was surrounded by a group of worthless fellows. However, God was working in Jephthah's life. We just read the spirit was upon him in the first part of that passage."

3) "The spirit that was upon Jethna is the same spirit that lives inside of us. As followers of Jesus Christ today, we have the same power in us that raised Jesus from the dead. So there's nothing when the spirit moves within our heart that we can't do as we move forth in his power and in his might. The question, though, for us today is when the Holy Spirit prompts and empowers us as he lives within us, will we go forth in his power and in his might? Or. Will we respond like Jephthah did?"

4) "Have you ever sensed the Holy Spirit wanting you to do something for him? And you begin moving in that direction. You're like, yeah, I'm ready to go. But then something happens. An if shows up. And fear and doubt take over. And you begin to let it direct your decision making. This happened to me numerous times. This has happened to me numerous times. One of those times was deciding to come right here to Percival Baptist Church. Now since the Holy Spirit was wanting to move us from our current ministry where we were in Texas, but fear and doubt kept directing my decisions. I had fallen back into a false identity that I had believed about myself."

5) "The God who created and owns everything needs nothing from me. Jephthah said, I'm going to give you a burnt offering if you give me victory. I said, I'll go to seminary if you give me a job. Sounds like some other promises we make, don't we? I've heard over the years. If you let me make more money, God, I'll start giving. If you let me get this job, then it'll give me time to serve and I'll serve you. If you fix my marriage, God, we will start praying together. You know, God, once sports season ends, we will come to church more. If you let me find a spouse, Lord, then I'll stop this sin addiction that I have."

6) "Making the promise isn't the problem. However, it's when we attach conditions to our promise, we move from wanting to do something for God or something we want to give God out of respect and awe for him to making the promise. We're trying to manipulate God to do what we want him to do. You see how that works? See, think about that for a moment. We're telling God we will only do a certain thing if he gives us the outcome that we want. I'll go to seminary, God, if you give me the outcome that I desire. Would I have gone to seminary if he didn't give me the job here at Percival Baptist Church? I don't know."

7) "Jephthah's only daughter comes out the door celebrating. The victory. Uh-oh. Danger, Will Robinson. Major dilemma. What is Jephthah going to do now? Well, let's see how he responds. Verse 35. As soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, At last, my daughter, you have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow. And at the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did what? With her according to his vow that he had made. Outside of not making the conditional promise from the get-go, I believe Jephthah shows us how we should respond if we, too, make a promise to God with conditions on it."

8) "We learn from this passage the dangers of making conditioned promises to God. If we do, then we may run into some serious problems. Some serious decisions that we ought to make as well. Why? Because God takes promises and vows seriously in the Bible. Proverbs 20, 25 warns that it's a promise. It's a trap to make a rash vow and then later consider it. Ecclesiastes 5, 4 says it's better to not make a vow than to make one and not fulfill it. Deuteronomy 23, 21. Ecclesiastes 5, 5 and 6 and Numbers 30, 15 all say that breaking a vow is a sin."
