Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Jeremiah opens with sorrow over shepherds who scattered the flock instead of caring for it. God brings judgment on leaders who used power to divide, destroy, and lead people toward idols, immorality, and injustice. The broken tree of Judah’s failed kings does not get the last word, because God promises that a Branch will rise from David’s line. That Branch is the righteous King, the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, and His name is Jehovah Sidkenu, the Lord Our Righteousness.

God reveals Himself in the needs of His people. Jehovah Jireh meets provision, Jehovah Rapha meets healing, and Jehovah Sidkenu meets the deepest need of all: a right standing before God. Personal effort cannot produce that standing. Rules can restrain behavior for a season, personal convictions can guide a life, and religious rituals can shape an appearance, but none of those things can make a sinner righteous. Sin still destroys, kills, and leaves weight on minds, bodies, families, and generations.

Christ does what failed shepherds and fallen humanity cannot do. Christ gathers those who were scattered, gives rest to those carrying heavy burdens, and brings fearful people into safety. His righteousness does not come through comparison with somebody down the road, because even the best grandmother, the strongest church member, and the most moral person still needs the blood of Jesus. All have sinned and come short of God’s glory. All therefore need righteousness that comes from outside themselves.

Romans declares that righteousness is received through faith in Jesus Christ. Christ, who knew no sin, was made sin so that believers might become the righteousness of God in Him. This gift is not permission to play games with sin or call God a common thing. This gift is power to face what cannot be handled in the flesh. The Lord becomes righteousness in the hard walk, the long wait, the battle for a child, the temptation to quit, and the moment when the old life wants to rise again.

Grace also refuses to let the past become the final word. Christ calls Matthew from the tax table, sits with sinners, receives the thief who cries out from the cross, and restores Peter after failure. Religion keeps score and puts up hoops, but faith pleads the blood. Jehovah Sidkenu means no condemnation remains for those found in Christ. God’s people finally stand before Him not on sermons preached, money given, works accomplished, or names known, but on the righteousness of Jesus Christ alone.
