Bible ReadingJudges 6:11-27 “Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, ‘The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.’ And Gideon said to him, ‘Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, "Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?" But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.’ And the Lord turned to him and said, ‘Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?’ And he said to him, ‘Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.’ And he said to him, ‘If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me. Please do not depart from here until I come to you and bring out my present and set it before you.’ And he said, ‘I will stay till you return.’ So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the terebinth and presented them. And the angel of God said to him, ‘Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them.’ And he did so. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes. And fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord. And Gideon said, ‘Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.’ Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. That night the Lord said to him, ‘Take your father's bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in an orderly way. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.’ So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night.”
[41:04]Ephesians 2:13-18 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.”
[01:05:03]John 14:26-27 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

[01:04:06]Observation questions- In Judges 6, what details show that Gideon does not look like a “mighty man of valor” when the Lord first meets him? [48:23]
- What reasons does Gideon give for why he seems like the wrong person to save Israel? [49:33]
- After Gideon realizes he has seen the angel of the Lord, what does the Lord say to him, and what does Gideon name the altar he builds there?
- In Judges 6:27, how does Gideon obey the Lord’s command, and what details show that fear is still present in his obedience? [59:42]
Interpretation questions- If shalom means wholeness and completeness, how does that deepen the meaning of the Lord’s words, “Peace be to you,” in Gideon’s moment of fear? [38:51]
- God does not argue with Gideon about being weak; he answers, “I will be with you.” What does that suggest about how God usually deals with human weakness? [57:22]
- Gideon’s complaint about injustice becomes a calling to act. How can grief or anger over what is broken become the place where God sends someone to serve rather than just complain? [56:48]
- Ephesians says that Christ “himself is our peace.” How is that bigger than saying Jesus helps people feel peaceful? [01:05:03]
Application questions- Where does life currently feel like it has a missing piece for you? Is it fear, grief, weakness, confusion, sin, loneliness, or something else? What would it look like to bring that lack honestly before the Lord instead of hiding it? [01:09:43]
- Gideon named his weakness plainly. What is one shortcoming you usually try to cover up or manage on your own? What might change if you admitted it more honestly to God and to a trusted believer? [01:11:12]
- When something in the world angers you, what do you usually do with that anger? Does it become prayer, action, generosity, service, advocacy, or mostly frustration? What part might God be calling you to play? [01:11:12]
- Gideon obeyed with help. Who are the “ten men” in your life right now—the people whose presence, prayers, or practical help make obedience more possible for you? If no one comes to mind, what might be a wise next step? [01:00:33]
- The body of Christ is meant to supply what one person lacks. Where have you been trying to be complete by yourself? What strength do you need to borrow from the church right now? [01:02:28]
- Jesus makes peace by bringing sinners near to God through the cross. When guilt, shame, or distance from God rises up, do you tend to reach for self-improvement or for Christ himself? What would it look like this week to rest more directly in his finished work? [01:05:03]
- God’s peace can hold a person together even in loss. Where do you need that kind of peace right now? What would it mean, very practically, to take comfort in God’s presence in the middle of that situation? [01:14:52]
