Moses’ arms grew heavy as the battle raged below. Victory depended not on his strength alone but on Aaron and Hur holding up his hands. Like soldiers rallying to a banner, their support turned the tide. God’s power flows through community, not solitary striving. When exhaustion threatens to lower your “staff,” who stands beside you? The altar Moses built declared: God’s banner covers those who let others share the weight. [02:04]

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5–6, NKJV)

Sermon Summary

Jehovah Nissi, the Lord is my banner, comes out of Exodus 17, where Amalek comes against Israel at Rephidim and Moses stands on the hill with the staff of God in his hand. Exodus shows Joshua fighting down in the valley, but the real issue is not Joshua’s sword or Moses’ “magic staff.” The real issue is that Israel has to learn who is over them, who fights for them, and whose name they gather under.

The banner image carries more weight than a strip of cloth, a newspaper headline, or some annoying pop-up ad. Ancient banners gave direction in noisy battles, showed friend from foe, marked allegiance, represented power, claimed territory, and declared victory. A banner told the battlefield what king a person served and what house that person belonged to. A ship flying the king’s flag carried the king’s authority and protection, and crossing that flag meant crossing the king himself.

Moses builds an altar and names it Jehovah Nissi because God is not trying to make Israel trust an object. God is teaching Israel that the Lord himself is the banner. The cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night are like a banner in the sky, leading them through the wilderness. The altar says, in effect, “God is the banner, not some magic stick.”

Numbers 21 deepens that picture when the bitten Israelites are told to look at the bronze serpent lifted up on a pole. The word for pole connects to banner, sign, standard, and signal. Bronze, used outside the tabernacle at the altar and basin, points toward sin being taken on and cleansing being given. The bronze serpent becomes a lifted banner that brings healing, but Israel later turns the sign into an idol and forgets the One it represented.
