Ministry, Mission, and Calling" guest speaker Jason Scott

Mission, ministry, and calling are three words that get used like they mean the same thing, but they are not the same thing. Mission answers the big question, “Why am I here?” Jesus gives that answer plainly in Luke 10: love the Lord with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love the neighbor as oneself. Mission belongs to every person who says yes to Jesus, not just church staff or missionaries. Salvation is more than a get out of hell free card. Christ saves people, and then their lives belong to him.

Mission changes the way people see others. The people who once looked like burdens begin to become a burden on the heart. Faith moves from something believed into something lived, and that is where mission becomes ministry. Ministry is simply serving another person in the name of Jesus. Philippians 2 pushes against “me church” because humility looks beyond personal interests and considers the interests of others.

Jesus gives ministry its shape by moving toward people. Christ washes feet, touches those considered unclean, welcomes children, and stops for people everyone else walks past. Programs, projects, events, and sermons matter because people matter. Ministry can happen in a kitchen, with flowers, in a choir, behind tech equipment, on a mission trip, or sitting quietly with a hurting family when there is no perfect thing to say. Ministry is learning to love people more than comfort, schedule, and importance.

Calling grows out of mission and ministry, but calling is more specific. Paul tells Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God because God has not given a spirit of timidity, but power, love, and self-discipline. God saves first and calls afterward. Calling becomes a response to grace, an answer to the question, “Jesus, what do you want to do with this life that you saved?”

Calling is not merely a church job, a title, a microphone, or an impressive role. Jobs, locations, titles, and seasons can all change, but God’s deeper purpose can remain steady. Calling is an available life offered back to God. North Alabama Boys shows how a burden, a passion, and a vision can become a way to serve people, even through barbecue.

Calling often begins where three things come together: what breaks the heart, what makes a person come alive, and what could be if God uses an available life. Mission starts with loving God and loving people. Ministry serves the people God places nearby. Calling keeps unfolding as God reveals the particular way a life can be used for his purposes.
