James: A Faith that Works - Are We Fooling Ourselves

James exposes the gap between the faith a person claims and the faith a person actually lives. Jesus shows practical love by running toward the mess and going all the way to the cross, and that kind of love gets its hands dirty rather than throwing money at a problem to feel better.

Pure and genuine religion finally lives distinctly. James calls God’s people to remain unstained while still living in the middle of the mess. The world does not usually corrupt through one huge decision, but through a slow fade, like food coloring swirling through a cup until the whole thing changes color. Pure religion does not hide in holy huddles, but it refuses to let the world write the rules.

James’s markers do not produce authentic faith. They reveal it. Jesus says that branches only bear fruit by remaining in the vine, because apart from him they can do nothing. The Holy Spirit produces careful speech, practical service, and intentional separation as evidence of Jesus at work. The gap does not always prove fake faith. For a surrendered follower of Christ, the tension in that gap shows that the work is still in process, and Jesus did not come to manage the gap. He came to close it.
