Facing Unbelief: Lessons from James on Faith

James’s unbelief is set in the hard place of growing up with Jesus as his older brother. James may have had to hear the neighborhood talk about Mary and defend his mother when people questioned who Jesus’ father was. James’s home life was not automatically easy just because Jesus was there. Unbelief can grow out of what people have lived through, what they have heard, and what foundation they were never given.

The foundation for faith is missing for many people today. Children do not hear the Christmas story, sing the hymns, or learn the Bible in school the way some earlier generations did. Unbelief among relatives, friends, and coworkers may begin simply because they have no basis for believing in a God they cannot see. The church’s witness must therefore become plain enough for people to see Christ in everyday life.

A changed life is called the best witness. Honesty at the time clock, refusing the little slick things, and treating people right when nobody is watching can plant little seeds. Christ’s character shows itself through conduct before it is explained in conversation. Faith becomes visible when a person’s life makes old friends ask, “What happened to you?”

Mark’s father cries, “Master, I do believe, but please help my unbelief.” Faith can be real and still need help. Faith must learn to call on God first, rather than reaching first for a phone, a weapon, or whatever seems close at hand. God is not ashamed to be called the God of people who keep moving forward in faith, even when they know they are not all they should be.

Matthew warns that Christ did not do many mighty works in a place because of unbelief. Mark shows that even the disciples were rebuked for unbelief and hardness of heart. Hebrews calls unbelief an evil heart because it departs from the living God and keeps people from entering in. James declares that bare belief is not enough, since devils also believe and tremble. Faith must move into action, because actions solidify belief, magnify it, and help it grow when hard times come.
