Genesis 32 sets Jacob before the greatest crisis of his life. Jacob has spent his life grabbing, deceiving, and looking out for number one, and at last it catches up with him. The name Jacob means cheater, deceiver, grabber, and that name fits the man who stole Esau’s blessing, fled for his life, and lived for twenty years without much sign of worship or surrender.

God had not forgotten Jacob. At Bethel, God gave Jacob the same promises given to Abraham and Isaac, but Jacob answered with a bargain. If God would feed him, clothe him, protect him, and bring him home, then the Lord would be his God. God still took Jacob where he was and kept working in his life, because God meets people where they are to take them where he wants them to be.

Genesis 31 calls Jacob back home, and going home means facing Esau. Esau comes with four hundred men, and Jacob is terrified. The old schemer divides his family, prepares for loss, and finally runs out of ideas. Then he prays. His prayer is honest and simple: “Save me, I pray.” Yet the gift of 550 animals shows that Jacob is still not resting in God’s promise. He is still trying to pacify Esau by his own efforts.

The Jabbok River becomes the place where Jacob is left alone with no family, no possessions, and only darkness. A stranger wrestles him through the night. At the very end of this encounter, it says that Jacob built an altar. He called the place Peniel because he saw God face to face and he was spared. Jacob was amazed.
