God stirs hunger before God gives assignment. The early picture of getting up at 3AM for the rugby becomes a simple question about what gets a heart ready. Preparation reveals desire. God’s word is meant to excite that same kind of readiness, not just for a game, but for revelation, truth, challenge, and change.
The old Ponsonby tarp story presses the point hard. Alfred can talk about creation, astronomy, galaxies, and telling time by the stars, but Tony looks up and says, “someone stole the tent.” The image says that cleverness, study, and experience can still miss the thing right in front of a person. The deeper question becomes what God sees, what God is saying, and what God is asking his people to do.
The Issachar mandate names that calling. Issachar comes from the story of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the twelve tribes, and that history matters because God is a generational God. Jacob becomes Israel through wrestling, and that name carries the call to contend with God until weakness becomes authority. God’s people are not made mature by avoiding hard questions, painful stories, or confusing seasons. The wrestle becomes part of the authority.
The tribe of Issachar understood the signs of the times and knew what Israel should do. Discernment therefore is not guesswork, flesh dressed up with “thus saith the Lord,” or religious busyness. Discernment is spiritual smart, street smart, and strategy smart. Spiritual smart listens to the Spirit. Street smart observes the culture, politics, and generation. Strategy smart asks God for today’s instruction instead of living off yesterday’s manna and quail.
The apostolic and prophetic gifts belong in that work. Prophetic revelation hears what God is saying. Apostolic action obeys with practical courage in homes, schools, businesses, communities, and public life. Prophetic intercession leads to apostolic action, because prayer is not meant to become passive hiding.
The church is called to be salt and light, not salt left in the jar or light kept away from dark places. The conscience of the state cannot stay silent while culture redefines what God created. Neutrality is a myth when laws, schools, homes, and public life are already being shaped by other visions. God’s people are called to stand as watchmen on their towers, pray with authority, know history and heritage, and act for such a time as this.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Discernment begins with real wrestling Jacob’s name became Israel after a night of contending, not after a tidy lesson or easy answer. God’s people gain authority when painful questions, family stories, disappointments, and confusion are brought before God instead of buried. The wrestle does not weaken faith when God is the one being held onto, it deepens substance and maturity. [77:13]
- 2. Old manna cannot feed today David did not assume yesterday’s battle plan would win tomorrow’s fight. God gave one strategy in one battle and another strategy by the mulberry trees, which means fresh obedience matters as much as past testimony. The old miracles are worth remembering, but they are not a substitute for asking God what faithfulness requires now. [88:34]
- 3. Salt must touch the meat Salt in a jar has no preserving power until it is poured out where decay is happening. Light changes darkness only by entering the place where light is absent. The call to be salt and light therefore requires presence, courage, and willingness to go into places that look difficult, political, messy, or even dangerous. [101:07]
- 4. Neutrality is already surrender The claim that the church can simply stay out of public life ignores the fact that public life is already shaping pulpits, homes, children, and speech. Silence does not keep a person pure from culture, it often lets another vision disciple the next generation. God’s people need discernment that sees the spiritual movement underneath the political issue. [105:31]
- 5. Intercession leads to action Prayer becomes the powerhouse when it listens for God’s strategy and then obeys. The seventy two electorates strategy shows that intercession can become specific, ordered, and grounded in God’s authority over leaders and nations. Prophetic prayer is not vague religious noise, it prepares apostolic action that takes back ground.
