Choices That Prevent Tragedy: Lessons from Israel's Kings

The plane crash gives the picture for the whole matter. Tragedy hardly ever just happens. The aircraft simply proceeds to the crash site. John Denver did not fall out of the sky because one little thing went wrong, but because distraction, poor planning, lack of fuel, and bad placement all came together. Sin works the same way. Sin is deceptive, tricky, and sometimes the consequences run ahead, while other times they trail behind. A prudent person sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

Israel’s story shows the same danger. Joshua brought the people into the land, the judges came when everybody did what was right in their own eyes, and the people finally cried out for a king. God had warned them that a king would enslave them, but the people kept wanting what everybody else had. Saul became a tragedy. David became a fighter, even fighting sin within himself. Solomon became a builder who started right, asked for wisdom, and received blessing, but his heart turned away because of women and idols. The tragedy had already occurred, and Israel was simply waiting for the crash site.

Rehoboam stands as a foolish southern king. The people asked him to lighten the heavy yoke Solomon had placed on them. The older men gave him good wisdom: serve the people, answer them favorably, and they will serve. Rehoboam rejected that advice and listened to the young men who had grown up with him. Their counsel sounded tough, but it was just dumb. “My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist,” and “I will scourge you with scorpions” did not make him strong. It split the kingdom.

Jeroboam stands as another kind of foolish king. Fear drove him to protect his power instead of honoring God. Jerusalem had the temple, so Jeroboam made new worship, new places, and new priests. Golden calves appeared again, and the old sin got dressed up like a new plan. His thinking was simple: as long as a person is kinda right, he is alright. But kinda right is still wrong when God has spoken.

The way away from disaster begins before the crash site. The heart must be examined. God must be invited to search what pride refuses to see. Friends must be weighed, because bad company corrupts good character. Counsel must be sought in crisis, but it must be godly counsel. God’s word must give direction, because port is on the left and starboard is on the right. In the end, Asa gives the better picture. Solomon pleased his wives, Rehoboam pleased his buddies, Jeroboam pleased himself, but Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord.
