Isolation Incubates Foolishness; Choose Wise Community

Proverbs 18:1 gives a small verse with a big warning: “Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire. He breaks out against all sound judgment.” The verse starts where real life starts, with trouble, pressure, stress, storms, and that 40 mile per hour January wind out of the North. Trouble and pressure do not ask if they are coming, they only ask when. The north wind shows what has really been built.

Proverbs says that one dangerous response to pressure is intentional isolation. Intentional isolation is not solitude with God, and it is not taking a quiet walk on the beach. That kind of isolation is detaching from vital relationships, especially the people who might challenge what is going on inside. The heart may have good things in it, but the Bible says to watch out for the heart, not just trust it.

Self pity can become part of that storm. Self pity may begin with real pain, but if it keeps growing, only bad things grow up out of it. The little proverb shows that a person pulls away “to seek his own desire.” The first line shows the flight, and the second line shows the fight, where isolation turns into breaking out against sound judgment.

The echo chamber, quiet quitting, self reliance, and a double life all show that isolation is not the absence of people. Isolation is the absence of challenge. Wise community is authentic, biblical, gospel centered community, where a person admits that self repair will not work and outside help is needed.

Enduring relationships, courageous honesty, and safe vulnerability become the place where sound judgment flourishes. Proverbs 28:13 says concealed transgression does not prosper, but confession and forsaking receive mercy.
