The Power of One Invitation: Prayer That Saves

The call to be planted on purpose begins with the simple truth that God has an amazing plan for a person’s life, and part of that plan is planting a seed of hope and eternal life in the lives of others. One invitation really does matter. One prayer prayed with boldness, one courageous conversation, one person anchored in Jesus Christ can impact a family, a community, and generations beyond a lifetime.

The Isle of Lewis revival shows what God can do when one invitation is preceded in prayer. Two elderly sisters prayed for revival, invited church leaders to pray, and then urged one preacher to invite Duncan Campbell to come and preach. God pressed that invitation so heavily on Campbell’s heart that he went, preached, and saw young people, families, churches, and villages changed. The point is plain: never underestimate what God can do with one prayer-powered invitation.

Acts 16:25-34 gives that same truth in the prison at Philippi. Paul and Silas had been beaten, stripped, chained, and thrown into the inner prison, yet at midnight they were praying and singing hymns to God. Their praise was not based on easy circumstances, because praising God is not dependent upon circumstances. The prisoners were listening, not just hearing noise in the background, but being captivated by wounded men responding in a way nobody expected.

God then sent an earthquake that shook the prison, opened the doors, and loosened the chains. Prayer does matter, and soul-shaking prayer can shake hard souls and break bondage. The jailer woke up, saw the doors open, and thought his life was over. Paul’s cry from the darkness, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here,” became a moment where gospel compassion broke through despair.

The jailer’s question, “What must I do to be saved?” received the clear answer: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” Paul and Silas did not point him to good works, good deeds, a good attitude, or all the roads the world offers. Salvation is found in Jesus alone, by God’s grace through faith. The jailer and his household believed, were baptized, and rejoiced, just like Lydia and her household. The invitation was not merely to make an emotional decision, but to become a disciple of Jesus for the rest of life.
