Intentional Living: Embracing Purpose in Our Spiritual Journey

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound theme of intentionality in our spiritual journey, drawing inspiration from the story of Jesus at the age of twelve, as recounted in Luke 2:41-52. This passage, often overlooked, reveals a pivotal moment in Jesus' life when He begins to understand His unique purpose and identity. As Jesus sits among the teachers in the temple, listening and asking questions, we see a model of intentional growth and learning. This narrative challenges us to reflect on our own lives and consider what we are intentional about. Are we living with purpose, or are we merely drifting through life?

Intentionality is crucial in our spiritual growth. Just as Jesus was intentional in seeking knowledge and understanding, we too must be deliberate in our pursuit of spiritual maturity. This involves planning our days, seeking opportunities to grow in our relationship with God and others, and being open to the lessons life presents. Growth does not happen by accident; it requires effort and dedication.

We also discussed the importance of community and service in our spiritual journey. Engaging with others through small groups, serving within the church, and reaching out to our neighbors are vital components of living intentionally. These actions not only foster personal growth but also contribute to the wholeness and well-being of the community.

As we navigate the ordinary and sometimes chaotic moments of life, we are reminded to find joy, peace, and courage through our faith. By being intentional in our spiritual practices, we can experience God's presence in profound ways, even in the mundane aspects of life.

Finally, I shared a personal announcement about my upcoming transition to a new role as a district superintendent in North Carolina. This decision, though unexpected, is a testament to the power of prayer and God's guidance in our lives. As we move forward, I encourage each of you to continue living intentionally, trusting that God has a plan for each of us.

Day 1: Intentional Pursuit of Spiritual Maturity
In the story of Jesus at the age of twelve, we see a young boy who is already intentional about His spiritual growth. He sits among the teachers in the temple, listening and asking questions, demonstrating a deliberate pursuit of knowledge and understanding. This narrative invites us to reflect on our own spiritual journeys. Are we actively seeking to grow in our faith, or are we passively drifting through life? Intentionality in spiritual growth requires planning our days, seeking opportunities to deepen our relationship with God, and being open to the lessons life presents. Growth does not happen by accident; it requires effort and dedication. As we strive to be more like Jesus, let us be intentional in our pursuit of spiritual maturity. [45:35]

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man." (Luke 2:52, ESV)

Reflection: What specific steps can you take today to be more intentional about your spiritual growth? Consider setting aside time for prayer, Bible study, or serving others.

Day 2: Community and Service as Pathways to Growth
Engaging with others through small groups and serving within the church are vital components of living intentionally. These actions not only foster personal growth but also contribute to the wholeness and well-being of the community. When we serve and connect with others, we create a supportive environment where everyone can grow together. Community and service are not just about what we can give, but also about what we can receive. By being part of a community, we learn from others, share our experiences, and support one another in our spiritual journeys. Let us be intentional in seeking out opportunities to engage with our community and serve those around us. [01:03:35]

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV)

Reflection: How can you actively engage with your community this week? Consider joining a small group or volunteering for a service project.

Day 3: Finding Joy in the Ordinary
As we navigate the ordinary and sometimes chaotic moments of life, we are reminded to find joy, peace, and courage through our faith. By being intentional in our spiritual practices, we can experience God's presence in profound ways, even in the mundane aspects of life. The story of Jesus in the temple teaches us that spiritual growth can happen in the most unexpected places. We do not need to wait for extraordinary moments to experience God's presence; He is with us in the everyday moments of life. Let us be intentional in finding joy and peace in the ordinary, trusting that God is at work in our lives. [01:07:12]

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand." (Philippians 4:4-5, ESV)

Reflection: What ordinary moments in your day can you turn into opportunities to experience God's presence? How can you find joy in the mundane today?

Day 4: Trusting in the Power of Prayer and Guidance
The personal transition to a new role as a district superintendent is a testament to the power of prayer and God's guidance. As we move forward in our lives, we must trust that God has a plan for each of us and be open to His leading. Prayer is a powerful tool that allows us to communicate with God and seek His guidance in our lives. When we pray, we invite God to be part of our journey and trust that He will lead us in the right direction. Let us be intentional in our prayer life, seeking God's guidance and trusting in His plan for our lives. [01:12:46]

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to seek God's guidance through prayer? How can you be more intentional in your prayer life today?

Day 5: Living with Purpose
We are challenged to reflect on our lives and consider what we are intentional about. Are we living with purpose, or are we merely drifting through life? Intentional living leads to growth and fulfillment. When we live with purpose, we align our actions with our values and beliefs, creating a life that is meaningful and fulfilling. Let us be intentional in our daily lives, seeking to live with purpose and make a positive impact on the world around us. [01:00:45]

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you feel you are drifting? How can you begin to live with more purpose in that area today?

Quotes

I think whenever I begin to look, one of the biggest things I recognize just from Jesus' life, once again, Jesus was fully God and knew all of these things, but yet in this moment of humanity, he reminds me, he reminds us that growth in our spiritual life happens with intentionality. It doesn't happen accidentally. [00:59:28] (27 seconds)

I mean, when we do that, things begin to change. See, sitting in a garage, doesn't make you a car. And sitting in a church service doesn't just make you a disciple of Jesus. There's intentionality. And it's only with intentionality do we really begin to see growth happen in our lives. [01:00:35] (25 seconds)

Growth in 2025 and even beyond will only come as you live intentionally. So, how do we grow? Well, I just want to tell you real quick. Number one, be intentional. Hopefully you've gotten that so far. Just be intentional. That's the first thing, right? You need to plan your days and you need to look for ways to grow in God. [01:01:06] (21 seconds)

Plan your days and look for ways. If you're going to grow and be intentional, then it might be important today to say, you know what? Today's a new day or tomorrow's a new day. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to make sure that I'm going to do this or do that or be here or be there or whatever it takes. [01:01:23] (16 seconds)

I'm going to be intentional. I'm going to work at what I believe I need to do. So plan your days and look for ways to grow in God. But on top of that, you can also plan your days and look for ways to grow with people. Because we live intentionally. Growth doesn't happen accidentally. [01:01:42] (20 seconds)

What happens accidentally is you get stuck. But whenever you begin to live intentionally, there are good things. And what I would say in this moment is that, you know, start at home. Start with, if you're married, start with your spouse. You got kids, start with your kids. If you got grandkids, start with your grandkids. [01:02:06] (15 seconds)
