Bible ReadingProverbs 4:23 “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
[36:16]1 Kings 19:1–18 “Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.’ Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.’ And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Arise and eat.’ And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, ‘Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.’ And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God. There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He said, ‘I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.’ And he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.’ And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’ He said, ‘I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.’ And the LORD said to him, ‘Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.’”
[50:46]Matthew 26:36–39 “Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, ‘Sit here, while I go over there and pray.’ And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, ‘My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.’ And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.’”
[44:04]Mark 12:30 “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
[37:45]Observation questions- According to Proverbs 4:23, what flows from the heart, and what does that reveal about the importance of paying attention to the inner life? [36:25]
- In Gethsemane, how does Jesus make His sorrow known, and whom does He involve as He faces it?
- What does God provide for Elijah before asking him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” What details in the passage show God’s gentleness? [53:15]
- What does Elijah say is happening in his life when God asks him the question, and what fears or beliefs does Elijah bring into the light? [54:19]
Interpretation questions- Proverbs says that life flows from the heart. What might it look like for anger, fear, grief, or exhaustion in a person’s heart to shape their words, relationships, and decisions? [40:54]
- Jesus was deeply sorrowful, yet He still surrendered to the Father’s will. How does His example show the difference between honestly naming an emotion and letting that emotion direct a person’s life? [48:20]
- Why might God have given Elijah sleep, food, and water before confronting the deeper matters in his heart? What does this suggest about caring for people who are overwhelmed or emotionally reactive? [52:52]
- God was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but He came to Elijah in a low whisper. What does this moment reveal about the way God meets a heart that has stopped hiding? [01:00:18]
Application questions- What warning light has been showing up in your heart lately—anxiety, grief, anger, heaviness, loneliness, lack of joy, or something else? What might that emotion be showing you about what is happening beneath the surface? [01:00:35]
- When difficult emotions come, do you tend more toward burying them and moving on, or reacting quickly and letting them control your response? What has that pattern produced in your life? [49:04]
- Jesus named His sorrow before the Father and trusted friends. Is there something you need to name honestly before God this week? Is there a trusted person who could walk with you in prayer rather than trying to fix everything? [45:13]
- Elijah’s exhaustion mattered. Are there practical needs—rest, food, slowing down, time away from pressure, or asking for help—that may be making it harder for you to discern what is happening in your heart? [53:03]
- Have you ever been brushed aside, shamed, or misunderstood after opening up about something painful? How might that experience have made it harder to bring your heart to God or to safe people? [55:58]
