Daniel’s story begins in a hard place. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were young men from Judah’s royal families, carried into Babylon when God’s people faced judgment for refusing to repent. Babylon surrounded them with idols, false worship, new language, new literature, and tremendous pressure to conform. The Babylonian culture wanted them to forget Yahweh and learn how Babylon thought, lived, and worshiped.
The king’s strategy reached deeper than outward behavior. Babylon gave these young men new names because a name is tied to identity. The enemy still works that way. If he can convince a born again believer to identify with failure, fear, shame, or the values of the world, he can affect how that believer lives. Daniel and his friends stood strong because there was something inside of them. They knew they belonged to God.
A born again identity begins with God’s word, not with feelings, past mistakes, or what other people say. God calls the believer a sinner forgiven and saved by mercy and grace, a new person with a new nature, and a child brought into God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ. God does not merely improve the old life. Christ makes a new creation.
Jesus also gives His people an identity for the world. Christ calls them salt and light, people who make a difference in dark places. Christ makes them His representatives, wearing a “Jesus coat” in daily life through words, actions, and attitudes. The believer is not sent into a hostile world empty handed, but as a witness through whom God calls others to be reunited with Him.
God also gives eternal security and present spiritual life. The believer is already a recipient of eternal life and a beneficiary of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The believer is a home for the Holy Spirit, a vital part of Christ’s body, and a priest and servant of God. Ministry to people flows out of first ministering to God in worship, praise, gratitude, and prayer.
Ephesians declares that those united with Christ have already been blessed with every spiritual blessing. This identity is not earned by human effort, but received in Christ. Daniel’s example calls God’s people to renew their minds, reject Babylon’s false labels, and live from the inside out as those who know who they are.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Identity shapes every action [12:27] Identity is never a small matter because people tend to live in line with how they see themselves. The world pressures believers to build identity around pleasure, approval, success, failure, or personal desire. God’s word calls believers to see themselves through the finished work of Christ. A renewed mind produces a changed life from the inside out. [12:27]
- 2. Forgiven sinners are God’s masterpiece [17:15] Grace does not deny sin, but it refuses to let sin have the final word. God saves by grace, not as a reward for good works, and He creates His people anew in Christ Jesus. The believer can acknowledge real failure without living under condemnation. Mercy and grace establish a new identity that leads into the good works God already planned. [17:15]
- 3. Christ’s people bring salt and light [21:48] Jesus calls His people salt and light because their presence is meant to make a difference. Salt brings flavor and preserves what is good, while light exposes darkness and gives direction. A believer does not need to copy the darkness in order to survive in it. Christ gives power to bring His life into homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and difficult relationships. [21:48]
- 4. Eternal life is already received [27:51] Eternal life is not merely a future hope waiting at the end of life. Christ gives eternal life now to those who trust in Him, making death a transition rather than a final defeat. The believer’s name is recorded in heaven as a recipient of God’s gift. This assurance drives fear out and anchors the heart in Christ’s resurrection. [27:51]
- 5. Blessed people become a blessing [36:22] God has already blessed those united with Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. Gratitude changes the posture of a person who stops waiting for life to become perfect before recognizing God’s goodness. God’s blessing is not given for self-centered living. Christ blesses His people so their lives may carry His goodness into the lives of others.
