Devotional
Day 1: Christ as the Center of Our Inheritance
In Ephesians 1:11-14, the centrality of Christ is emphasized as the source of our spiritual blessings and inheritance. This passage highlights that our identity, purpose, and future are deeply rooted in Christ. Every blessing and aspect of our salvation is intricately connected to Him, underscoring the importance of living a Christ-centered life. By understanding that all things are from Him, through Him, and to Him, we are encouraged to focus our lives on Christ, allowing His presence to guide our actions and decisions. [03:57]
Colossians 1:16-17 (ESV): "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you can more intentionally make Christ the center? How can you start doing that today?
Day 2: Assurance Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role as our seal and guarantee of the inheritance we have in Christ. This assurance is not just a future hope but a present reality, providing us with confidence and security in our salvation. The Spirit's presence in our lives is a constant reminder of God's faithfulness and the certainty of His promises. As believers, we are called to rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance and strength, trusting in His work within us as we navigate our spiritual journey. [00:53]
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (ESV): "And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."
Reflection: How can you become more aware of the Holy Spirit's presence in your daily life? What steps can you take to listen and respond to His guidance today?
Day 3: Trusting in God's Predestined Plan
Our inheritance in Christ is a result of God's predestined plan, highlighting His sovereignty and purpose in our lives. This understanding of predestination should lead us to trust in God's plan, knowing that He works all things according to His will for our good and His glory. By embracing this truth, we can find peace and assurance in the midst of uncertainty, confident that God is orchestrating every detail of our lives for His divine purpose. [07:12]
Ephesians 1:4-5 (ESV): "Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to trust God's plan? How can you begin to surrender this area to Him and trust in His sovereignty today?
Day 4: Embracing Our Adoption as God's Children
Being adopted into God's family means we are heirs to His promises, assured of our identity and inheritance in Christ. This profound truth calls us to live as children of God, reflecting His character and love in the world. Our adoption assures us of our place in God's family and the inheritance that comes with it, encouraging us to embrace our identity and live in a way that honors our Heavenly Father. [08:36]
Romans 8:15-17 (ESV): "For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!' The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him."
Reflection: How does knowing you are adopted into God's family change the way you view yourself and your purpose? What is one way you can reflect God's love to others today?
Day 5: Living for the Praise of God's Glory
Our ultimate purpose is to live for the praise of God's glory, reflecting His greatness and goodness in our lives. As we embrace our inheritance and identity in Christ, we are called to live in a way that honors and glorifies God. This means allowing our lives to be a testament to His grace and love, pointing others to Him through our actions and words. By living for His glory, we fulfill our divine purpose and bring honor to His name. [09:07]
1 Peter 2:9 (ESV): "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
Reflection: In what ways can your life better reflect the glory of God? What is one specific action you can take today to live for His praise and honor?
Sermon Summary
In Ephesians 1:11-14, we explore the profound truth of our inheritance in Christ. This passage is a continuation of a single, flowing sentence from verses 3 to 14, emphasizing the centrality of Christ in our spiritual blessings. In Christ, we have obtained an inheritance, predestined according to God's purpose, who orchestrates all things according to His will. This inheritance is not just a future promise but a present reality, sealed by the Holy Spirit, who guarantees our redemption and ultimate possession. The repeated phrase "in Him" underscores that every blessing, every aspect of our salvation, is intricately connected to Jesus.
Paul's theology here is high and soaring, inviting us to grasp the grandeur of God's plan. The inheritance we receive is not merely material or temporal but is deeply spiritual, rooted in our adoption as sons and daughters of God. This adoption assures us of our place in God's family and the inheritance that comes with it. The Holy Spirit's role as a seal and guarantee is crucial, providing us with assurance and hope as we await the full realization of our inheritance.
The passage also highlights the preeminence of Christ in all things. From creation to redemption, everything is through Him and for Him. Our lives, therefore, find their meaning and purpose in Christ. The inheritance we have is a testament to God's initiative and grace, predestined for us before the foundation of the world. This truth calls us to live lives that reflect the glory of God, as we are reminded that our ultimate purpose is to be to the praise of His glory.

Sermon Clips
In him that is in Christ Jesus, we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. [00:12:08]
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance unto the redemption of the possession to the praise of his glory. [00:39:12]
Grant us capacious hearts that are made big enough to feel something, grasp something of the grandeur of what's here in Paul's amazing, high-flying theology. I pray this in Jesus' name, amen. It begins with in him or in whom that's how it's all one sentence that goes from verse 3 to 14. [00:73:20]
You cannot miss the fact that in him, an inheritance in him, you were sealed so everything, all the blessings that come to us in these verses, are in connection to Jesus. And you can see what Paul is doing if you just bring in the parallel over in Colossians by him by Jesus. [03:00:00]
All things were created in heaven on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him. In other words, he's the origin of all things, and he's the goal of all things. From the beginning, he gets everything going. [03:27:20]
So how is it that you have obtained an inheritance? Your answer is Christ Jesus. It's in connection with Jesus in connection with Jesus that I have sealing in connection with Jesus that I have election in connection with Jesus that I have predestination or redemption. [04:16:56]
In everything, he might be preeminent in Colossians 1:18 that in everything he might be preeminent from him through him to him so that little word in him there oh my the implications of the grand centrality of Christ as we saw last time. [04:37:12]
In him, we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined so the way this comes about is by predestination. In other words, God's initiative in predestining us is how we have an inheritance. Let me show you the parallel back here that you may remember in verse 4 and 5. [07:09:20]
He chose us in him so there's being chosen in him having predestined us so choosing having been chosen having been predestined corresponds to being chosen for an inheritance having been predestined one more connection for us to see this choosing here is precisely for this inheritance. [07:32:56]
When you are made a full son of God, you get an inheritance. That's what adoption that's the glory of adoption. God becomes our inheritance not we become his inheritance though that's also true but what's being stressed here is that we were chosen having been predestined for adoption as sons. [08:36:00]
What it's doing here is simply making explicit a blessing another blessing in Christ implied in verse 5. Verse 5 said we were predestined for sonship verse 11 adds included in the sonship is an inheritance and there's lots more to say about what that inheritance is. [09:10:56]
In him, we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. [00:12:08]
