Inheritance, Borders, and the Cost of Compromise

Joshua 15 opens with Judah receiving the first great portion west of the Jordan, a huge southern inheritance because Judah is huge, and because Judah is going to matter all the way down the line. The detailed northern border around Jerusalem draws a firm line in the sand before the nation ever knows that a Northern Kingdom and Southern Kingdom will one day split apart. The Valley of Ben Hinnom, later called Gehenna, carries a heavy shadow, because that place becomes Jerusalem’s burning landfill and the place where children are offered to Molech. Christ steps into that same region and claims even that horror by His blood, because no sin sits outside the reach of His cleansing when confession comes before Him.

Caleb’s inheritance at Hebron shows an 85 year old man still holding fast to what God promised. Caleb drives out the giants, then offers his daughter Achsah to the man bold and faithful enough to take Debir. Achsah’s request for the upper and lower springs shows a daughter who knows the goodness of her father and asks boldly. The springs in a dry and dusty land become the picture of a father giving more than a place to survive, because water means blessing, life, and fruitfulness.

The long list of Judah’s cities slows the reader down because Judah is not just another tribe. Judah will become the last kingdom standing, the tribe of David, and the tribe of the Messiah. Engedi appears as a little wilderness gift, the spring of goats near the Dead Sea, where David will hide and where God will sustain life in a place that looks like it can only mock thirst.

Jerusalem’s unfinished conquest reveals the first cracks in obedience. Judah can burn the city, but Judah does not secure it, and Benjamin cannot finish the job. Joshua 16 then turns to Ephraim, the influential younger son of Joseph, and that influence becomes dangerous when Ephraim lets Canaanites remain as forced labor. The issue is not weakness but compromise, because sin left inside the borders does not stay tame.

Joshua 17 explains Manasseh’s massive portion through the daughters of Zelophehad. Their inheritance comes because they asked, trusting that the God of Israel would do right. Their names are written in the book to protect the promise. The complaint of Joseph’s sons then exposes pride, because they boast of being numerous and strong but shrink back from the iron chariots. Joshua’s answer puts them under the weight of their own words: if the hill country is too small, then clear the forest and drive out the Canaanites.

The lot for the tribe of the people of Judah according to their clans reached southward to the boundary of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin at the farthest south. And their south boundary ran from the end of the Salt Sea, from the bay that faces southward. It goes out southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, and goes up south of Kadesh-barnea, along by Hezron, up to Addar, turns about to Karka, passes along to Azmon, goes out by the Brook of Egypt, and comes to its end at the sea. This shall be your south boundary. And the east boundary is the Salt Sea, to the mouth of the Jordan. And the boundary on the north side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth of the Jordan. Joshua 16:1-10
The allotment of the people of Joseph went from the Jordan by Jericho, east of the waters of Jericho, into the wilderness, going up from Jericho into the hill country to Bethel. Then going from Bethel to Luz, it passes along to Ataroth, the territory of the Archites. Then it goes down westward to the territory of the Japhletites, as far as the territory of Lower Beth-horon, then to Gezer, and it ends at the sea. The people of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, received their inheritance. The territory of the people of Ephraim by their clans was as follows: the boundary of their inheritance on the east was Ataroth-addar as far as Upper Beth-horon, and the boundary goes from there to the sea. On the north is Michmethath. Then on the east the boundary turns around toward Taanath-shiloh and passes along beyond it on the east to Janoah, then it goes down from Janoah to Ataroth and to Naarah, and touches Jericho, ending at the Jordan. From Tappuah the boundary goes westward to the brook Kanah and ends at the sea. Such is the inheritance of the tribe of the people of Ephraim by their clans, together with the towns that were set apart for the people of Ephraim within the inheritance of the Manassites, all those towns with their villages. However, they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made to do forced labor.

Joshua 17:1-18
Then allotment was made to the tribe of Manasseh, for he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, were allotted Gilead and Bashan, because he was a man of war. And allotments were made to the rest of the tribe of Manasseh, by their clans, Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida. These were the male descendants of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their clans. Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, but only daughters. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance along with our brothers.” So according to the mouth of the Lord he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father. Thus there fell to Manasseh ten portions, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan, because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance along with his sons. The land of Gilead was allotted to the rest of the Manassites. The territory of Manasseh reached from Asher to Michmethath, which is east of Shechem.
