Matthew opens the birth of Jesus by saying plainly that Jesus is the Messiah, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of Mary. The virgin conception means Jesus is not merely a great human leader from David’s line. Jesus is the eternal Son of God who took on real human flesh. The incarnation means that God came in the flesh, not as an idea, not as a distant force, but as the God man who came to seek and save the lost.
Joseph shows what righteous obedience looks like when life takes a turn that could bring shame and confusion. The angel calls Joseph to care more about what God says than what society says. Joseph has to give up control, including the father’s usual authority to name a child, because this child belongs to God in a unique way. Jesus receives His name because He will save His people from their sins.
The name of Jesus pushes back against the human tendency to create God in human image. God has the authority to name His children, and identity begins with being a child of God: loved, accepted, forgiven, and adopted. The world tries to name people by jobs, money, family, hobbies, or whatever they can achieve. God gives a deeper name that lines up with His calling, gifting, and purpose.
Matthew also connects Jesus to Isaiah’s promise of Immanuel, “God with us.” Immanuel does not compete with the name Jesus. Immanuel proclaims who Jesus is: Jesus is God, Jesus is human, and Jesus is with His people. Christianity stands apart because Jesus did not simply come to tell people how to find God. Jesus came because people could never get to God on their own. The Father draws people, and Christ comes to rescue them.
Jesus becomes fully human so that He can truly be with humanity without overwhelming it in divine holiness. Jesus gives up divine privileges and lives in this world out of His humanity, walking in perfect dependence on the Father and the Spirit. Jesus is tempted, rejected, betrayed, and hurt like humanity is, yet He remains without sin.
Jesus then says that those who believe in Him will do the works He did. The Holy Spirit qualifies believers to walk in spirit mode instead of flesh mode. The call is not to work up power or take control, but to submit daily, pick up the cross, die to self, and let the Spirit lead. God does amazing things through lives that are surrendered to Him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s word outranks society’s approval Joseph faces a situation that could cost him reputation, comfort, and acceptance. The angel does not promise that society will understand, but God does make clear what obedience requires. Faithfulness often means receiving God’s direction when other people will label it foolish or shameful. [08:28]
- 2. Jesus alone has authority to name The command to name the child Jesus shows that Joseph does not possess ultimate authority over this child. Human beings often try to put conditions on God and reshape Jesus around personal preferences. Christ cannot be managed, renamed, or made to fit anybody’s demands. [11:34]
- 3. Identity begins as God’s child God gives His children an identity deeper than a job, role, achievement, or failure. Being loved, accepted, forgiven, and adopted is not a shallow label but the ground from which calling grows. God’s name for a person brings together His gifts, His shaping, and His purpose. [14:37]
- 4. Immanuel means God truly came near Jesus is not only a prophet pointing toward God or a teacher offering better advice. Jesus is God with humanity, fully divine and fully human. Christ comes near because lost people cannot climb their own way into God’s family. [21:07]
- 5. The Spirit leads surrendered daily obedience Jesus lives in dependence on the Father and operates by the Spirit in His humanity. Believers receive the Holy Spirit, yet must choose daily to submit rather than live in flesh mode. Picking up the cross means yielding control again and again so that God can work through ordinary human lives.
