Bible ReadingEzekiel 47:1-12 Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. Then he brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around on the outside to the outer gate that faces toward the east; and behold, the water was trickling out on the south side.
[01:01:03]Going on eastward with a measuring line in his hand, the man measured a thousand cubits, and then led me through the water, and it was ankle-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was knee-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was waist-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen. It was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. And he said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?”
[01:03:39]Then he led me back to the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river very many trees on the one side and on the other. And he said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live, and there will be very many fish. For this water goes there, that the waters of the sea may become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they are to be left for salt. And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”
[01:18:27]John 7:37-39 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
[01:32:28]John 6:66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
[01:07:03]Mark 10:17-22 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.”
[01:13:43]And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
[01:13:43]Acts 5:1-11 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.”
[01:21:53]When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” But Peter said, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.
[01:21:53]Observation questions- In Ezekiel 47, what changes as the man is led farther from the temple, and what happens wherever the river goes? [01:01:03]
- What do the disciples in John 6:66 do after Jesus’ difficult words, and how does their choice connect with the picture of wet feet that can still walk away? [01:07:03]
- What words and actions show that the rich young ruler was serious and respectful when he first came to Jesus? What changed when Jesus addressed his possessions? [01:13:43]
- In Acts 5, what did Ananias and Sapphira keep back, and what did they falsely present before the apostles? [01:22:22]
Interpretation questions- Ezekiel’s river begins as a small stream from the sanctuary but becomes a river that cannot be crossed. What does this picture show about the Spirit’s work in a believer’s life: is it meant to remain manageable, or to become life-directing? [01:28:06]
- The rich young ruler knelt before Jesus and asked about eternal life, yet he left sorrowful. What does his response reveal about the difference between needing Jesus for help and surrendering what Jesus asks a person to release? [01:16:02]
- Ananias and Sapphira were not condemned merely for owning property; Peter emphasized their lie and their attempt to appear more surrendered than they were. Why is hidden resistance to God especially dangerous when a person is trying to look fully committed? [01:23:53]
- Jesus says that living water will flow out of the believer. How does this keep a Spirit-filled life from becoming only a private experience of blessing? [01:38:49]
Application questions- Ankle-deep water changes the way a person walks. Are there places you go, habits you keep, or directions you are considering that reveal you are still choosing your own path? What would it look like for your walk to keep moving toward God? [01:09:36]
- Knee-deep water turns “I believe in God” into “I need God.” Where are you most tempted to handle life by yourself right now—your relationships, work, finances, future, or personal struggles? How could you bring that need honestly to God in prayer this week? [01:12:16]
- The rich young ruler went away sorrowful because he had something he could not release. Is there something good but tightly held in your life that could become an obstacle to following Jesus fully? [01:17:32]
- At waist-deep water, the question becomes, “Who is going to rule me?” Which struggle feels most real right now: appetite, temper, sexuality, pride, bitterness, wounds, ambition, fear, or something else? What would repentance look like beyond simply feeling sorry? [01:25:05]
- A real inward fight against sin can be evidence that a person belongs to Jesus, because dead things do not fight. In what area do you sense that struggle, and how can this group help you keep choosing the Spirit instead of giving in to the flesh? [01:26:20]
- Touching the bottom allows a person to brace, push back, and keep control. What “bottom” do you tend to hold onto when trusting God feels uncertain—your plans, your image, your comfort, your money, or your need to control the outcome? [01:29:36]
- The goal is not only to get deeper in the river, but for the river to get deeper in us and flow toward others. Who in your household, workplace, neighborhood, or church needs the life, healing, encouragement, or witness that God wants to flow through you? [01:39:18]
