In Christ [Living Like Jesus]

Matthew 5 takes the “in Christ” questions and pushes them outside the doors. Identity is not meant to stay hidden. Jesus does not call his people to be a spiritual chia pet, just sitting there while something happens. Jesus gives identity first, then assignment, and that identity becomes visible in the way his people live, love, and influence the world around them.

Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth.” Jesus does not say, “Try to become salt.” Salt preserves, flavors, and influences whatever it touches. Salt stuck in the shaker does not accomplish anything. The workplace becomes more than a paycheck, the neighborhood becomes more than an address, and family becomes more than responsibility. God places his people everywhere for a reason, and gracious speech “seasoned with salt” matters because what comes out of a person reveals what is inside.

Jesus also says, “You are the light of the world.” Light is about visibility. Light does not argue with darkness. Light just exists, and darkness gives way. Jesus does not send his people into dark places to complain about how dark it is. Jesus sends light to shine there. The darker the environment, the more valuable the light becomes. The call is not to hide from darkness, and it is not to become darkness in order to reach darkness. The call is simply to shine.

Jesus then makes the whole thing practical: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” The goal is not Christian self-promotion. The goal is not for people to say somebody is a really good Christian. The goal is for people to see right through the person and see the Father in heaven. Christlike influence points away from self and toward Jesus.

The family resemblance should show. God’s children should forgive differently, serve differently, love differently, respond to conflict differently, handle success differently, and handle suffering differently. Jesus is not asking for perfection, but progression. The gospel is deeper than “go do better.” God already loves his children, and Jesus already is the light of the world. The Holy Spirit makes God’s people more and more like him, so the calling is not to manufacture light but to reflect it.
