The chaos of disaster drills mirrors life’s crises where limited resources force hard choices. Victims plead “don’t leave me” through smoke and rubble, their cries echoing our spiritual desperation. Yet where human help fails, God’s nature defies triage logic. His commitment isn’t limited by our wounds, our failures, or others’ assessments. The One who entered time as Emmanuel refuses to mark any life “too far gone.” [42:31]

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Day 2: The Shock of God’s Withness

A teenage virgin’s womb cradles divinity. A king’s lineage includes idolaters. Seven centuries pass before Isaiah’s prophecy breathes in a Bethlehem stable. Isaiah 7 opens in a mess. Ahaz faces enemies on every side, and God sends Isaiah to him with a word, even telling Isaiah to bring Shear-jashub, whose name means “a remnant shall return.” That name carries a warning: Ahaz needs to pay attention, because trusting anything besides God will leave Judah reduced and running back home.

Ahaz receives an invitation to ask God for a sign, from the depths or the heights, but his answer is false modesty. Isaiah answers with the sign Ahaz did not ask for: “the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.” God with us. Ahaz makes his alliance with Assyria anyway, takes on Assyrian gods, and walks Judah into idolatry. Yet God’s redemptive plan keeps moving, even through a bad king in the lineage of Jesus.

Matthew 1 brings Isaiah’s word into its greater fulfillment. Jesus is conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, called Jesus because He saves His people from their sins, and called Immanuel because God has come near. God does not merely send instructions to a separated creation. God steps into the human situation Himself, lives among broken people, and gives His life so relationship with the Father can be restored.

The Holy Spirit begins moving all through Jesus’ arrival. The Spirit overshadows Mary, fills John in Elizabeth’s womb, fills Elizabeth and Zacharias, rests upon Jesus, leads Jesus into the wilderness, and anoints Jesus for His mission. Jesus stands in the synagogue and declares Isaiah 61 fulfilled: the Spirit has sent Him to preach good news, heal broken hearts, free captives, and bring sight to the blind.

John’s Gospel carries Immanuel even further. Jesus tells troubled disciples that His departure is actually to their advantage, because the Helper will come. The Holy Spirit is not some impersonal force. He is Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, Standby, and Spirit of truth. Through Jesus, Jew and Gentile have access by one Spirit to the Father.

God with us means that God does not leave His people alone when life turns chaotic. The image of disaster triage exposes the lie many wounded people have heard: “You are too far gone. Nobody can help you. God has moved on.” Emmanuel answers that lie. God never leaves, never forsakes, and never triages away the person religion, sin, addiction, regret, sickness, or other people have declared hopeless. Christ restores relationship, and the Spirit makes God’s presence real wherever His people go.
