Imitators & Fruit Salad

The struggle at the front door makes room for God to show up, because sometimes the only way a person really sees God is when the struggle is allowed to happen. Galatians sets the table with the fruit of the Spirit, and Ephesians 5 starts making a “fruit salad” out of love, light, wisdom, and marriage. Ephesians 1 through 3 shows who God is, and Ephesians 4 begins the response. Ephesians 5 keeps that response moving by saying, “be imitators of God as dear children.”

Paul begins with imitation, and imitation starts inside the family. God does not leave His people outside the picture, trying to earn their way in. God calls them “dear children,” because a child does not become a child by performing. A child belongs because life has already been given. So the first step in imitating God is to “walk in love.”

Love is not a thin feeling or just a romantic word. Love is agape, affection, communion, a feast, the kind of love where God would rather sit down at the table with His people than without them. Since 1 John says God is love, Ephesians can be heard as a call to walk in God. The list of “don’ts” that follows is not God being small or stingy. The list is small because the life of love is much larger than the life of sin.

Love then turns the lights on. Ephesians says, “you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” God is light, Jesus is the light of the world, and that light exposes darkness. But love has to come first, because otherwise light can become a way to “light everybody else up” instead of exposing darkness so life can happen.

Light then leads to wisdom. Wisdom is not just knowing things. Wisdom is knowledge applied, like knowing a tomato is a fruit but also knowing not to put it in the fruit salad. God founded the earth by wisdom, and wisdom naturally creates. So love, light, and wisdom move toward creativity.

Marriage then becomes the picture of covenant creativity. Ephesians 5 gives wives a short but weighty call to submit and respect, and gives husbands a long call to love, give, sanctify, wash, present, nourish, and cherish. Marriage points beyond itself to Christ and His church, and Genesis shows the same pattern: love, light, wisdom, creation, marriage, and then the command, “be fruitful.” God is inviting His people to make something beautiful, enough fruit to share.
