Love does took center stage in the aftermath of September 11, when hate, destruction, and death did not get the final word. The little town of Gander, Newfoundland, doubled its population overnight, welcoming thousands of stranded airline passengers with sandwiches, soup, blankets, homes, churches, schools, rides, and room to grieve. Love does showed itself in ordinary people stepping into an extraordinary crisis and saying, in effect, “You are not alone. We are with you.” Love always wins because love moves toward people when life is uncertain and painful.
Jesus carries that same promise in the name Emmanuel, “God with us.” Isaiah names Him this way, and Hebrews repeats God’s promise: “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” God’s presence is not just a Christmas truth for baby Jesus. God with us is an ongoing declaration for every good season, every hard season, every fear-filled moment, and every place where someone wonders whether anybody has their back.
Fear stands as one of the biggest shackles keeping love from doing what love does. God’s promises that He is with His people, that He is their God, that He strengthens, helps, and upholds them, become the foundation for fearlessness. Love does is not powered by personality, hype, or trying harder. God’s lavish love, put on full display through Jesus Christ, becomes the source. John 3:16 shows a God who so loved that He gave, and that kind of love changes how His people live.
Love does does not require perfection. Love didn’t stories are real, including the times people drive past someone in need and keep going. Love does, however, creates moments when someone stops, offers help, speaks assurance, and simply stays present until help arrives. The Holy Spirit invites believers into some of those moments, whether they are planned acts of care or sudden interruptions nobody saw coming.
Jesus gives the church its marching orders to make disciples, but He ends those orders with the promise that matters most: “I am always with you.” The disciples faced prison, suffering, and death with that assurance ringing in their hearts. Emmanuel means Christ remains with His people even when life is horrifically bad.
Love does lets people know, “I am with you. I am for you. I believe in you.” Presence, availability, consistency, active listening, celebration, mourning, sacrifice, holy risk-taking, support, and understanding all put that love on display. Love does does not always mean agreement, but it does mean showing up. God’s love makes a way forward where despair, lifeless faith, and dead ends once seemed to have the last word.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God is always with His people [41:13] Emmanuel is not a seasonal name or a distant idea. Jesus speaks His presence over disciples who will face real danger, grief, and loss. God’s nearness does not guarantee an easy road, but it gives courage for the road that is actually there. [41:13]
- 2. Fear often keeps love from acting [28:06] Fear raises the endless “what if” questions that can leave people stuck on the sidelines. God’s presence becomes the foundation for taking the next faithful step. Love does not wait until every risk disappears before it moves toward someone in need. [28:06]
- 3. Love shows up in practical ways [21:26] Gander’s care was not flashy, but it was unforgettable because it met actual needs. Sandwiches, beds, rides, shelter, and space to grieve became a powerful witness to love. God often puts love on display through simple acts offered at exactly the right time. [21:26]
- 4. Presence does not require agreement [50:05] Jesus repeatedly showed up around people without endorsing every part of their lives. Love can be for someone, believe in someone, and remain available to someone without pretending every choice is right. Faithful presence refuses both isolation and shallow approval. [50:05]
- 5. Intentional love can shape a life [49:18] Consistent encouragement, safe conversations, and simply showing up can plant seeds that bear fruit years later. Love does is often slow, ordinary, and costly before anyone sees what God is doing. God uses faithful relationships to make His lavish love believable.
