Stop Performing, Start Trusting: Identity in Christ

Paul’s words in Ephesians 2:8-10 tear down the lie that says a person has to perform well enough to earn value, acceptance, or salvation. The world keeps asking, “What do you do?” and then tries to make a career, income, accomplishments, reputation, or even the success of children into somebody’s identity. Hard work is good, and faithful work matters, but the problem starts when what somebody does becomes who somebody is. A big crowd can make a person feel valuable, while a small crowd can make a person feel less valuable. Compliments can make somebody feel important, while one criticism can make somebody feel worthless. Jesus alone gets to define identity.

Grace says salvation is not achieved, but received. Paul says salvation comes “by grace through faith,” and it is not from ourselves, not by works, so that nobody can boast. Salvation is a gift, not an income. A paycheck is earned, but a gift is received. Jesus did not come because people were good enough to climb their way to God. Jesus came because sinners needed rescuing.

Performance-based faith turns a relationship with God into a transaction. Pain can expose that kind of thinking, especially when faithful service seems like it should earn a desired outcome. Grace reminds hurting people that God never promised faithful people would avoid storms, grief, or pain. God promised that His grace would be sufficient and that He would never leave or forsake His children. Obedience does not put God in anybody’s debt. Obedience flows from the grace already received.

The cross destroys boasting because Jesus paid it all. Religion says “do,” “try harder,” and “prove yourself.” The gospel says “done,” “trust Jesus,” and “Jesus has already paid it.” Jesus took the record of sin and gave believers His righteousness. Paul’s language in Galatians 2:20 says the old life has been crucified, meaning it has died. Christ gives a new identity that is not controlled by the past, worst failures, titles, other people’s opinions, or unfinished struggles.

God’s workmanship does not need to fix itself before coming to Him. God meets people in brokenness, including the things they cannot repair by trying harder. Jesus calls people to stop performing and start trusting. Those who belong to Christ work from the identity He has given them, not for an identity they are still trying to earn.
