#GodSpeaks
“``The fundamental conviction of our faith is not so much that God is as that God speaks. There's a very big difference in just believing that God exists because it's easy to keep that as an abstract thing. There's plenty of people out there who believe in some form of higher power. It's a very different thing to believe that God speaks because speaking is an intimate and an active thing. It totally transforms what we mean when we say we believe in God. And let's run through the whole Bible in ten seconds. He speaks creation into being in Genesis. And then right at the end of Revelation, we hear Jesus' spoken invitation to come. And so throughout scripture, God again and again speaks to his people. He speaks creation and invitation. He speaks judgment and salvation. Speaks healing and guidance, oracle and admonition, rebuke, and comfort.”

#HearJesusFollow
“And at a basic level, to be a Christian is to be someone who recognizes Jesus' voice and follows it. Sheep don't attend lectures. They just follow when they hear the shepherd's voice. And by recognizing Jesus' voice and following it, it implies that we also don't follow the other voices that would have sway over our lives. And so my next question to you today is, you know how to hear God's voice? Because if you believe that he has something to say to you, then the next logical question is, okay. Well, how do I listen? How do I hear? How do I discern? And learning to truly hear and discern God's voice and respond to it is one of the most important things you can do with your life.”

#SafeInTheFlock
“And what the sheep that are close to the shepherd get? They get saved from the things that would steal and kill and destroy. They get ongoing protection as he lies across the threshold of the door and keeps them safe and keeps intruders from coming in. And they get put out to pasture. They get what they need. They get grass to eat. And this is life to the full, being in God's flock, listening to his voice, being within range of his voice. And if you hear God's voice and you respond to it, you'll walk in his will, and there is nothing more abundant and good than that. Plain and simple. And so, we are sheep, friends. That's all we are. And our job is to stay within range of the shepherd, listen to his voice, live with the expectation that he has something to say to us, and he will take care of the rest.”

#GodSpeaksToday
“And we shouldn't read these stories from the bible and think, oh, that's great that God spoke to them then. We should read these stories and think, wow, God, you could speak to me now. And whatever else could happen to you on any given day of your life, you could encounter the living God. He could speak to you. And we need to be people who live with that expectation. Our faith is living. Its act of God is alive. He's on the move. This is not just history. It's not just theology. This is the real nitty gritty stuff of everyday life. God speaks to us, and he speaks to us personally.”

#ListenAndObey
“There's almost nothing more important than that. Learning to listen for the shepherd's voice and respond to it. All the sheep do in this story is listen and follow. If you read Psalm 23, almost all of the verbs are to do with what God does. Sheep just follow. They listen to his voice, and they follow. Stay within hearing range and follow the leader. I wonder if the conditions of your life make it possible for you to hear God's voice. And I wonder if you do hear God's voice, do you act on it? Do you respond to what he says? In the biblical worldview, particularly in Hebrew, but it it trickles over into the New Testament because, of course, many, if almost all of the writers of the New Testament, were Jewish. To hear did not just mean to listen like a passive listening to music. To hear was very closely conflated with the idea of to do, to obey, to act, to respond.”

#JesusIsTheDoor
“This saying, I am the door, it made me think as well of of John fourteen six. I am the way and the truth and the life. It has that nature of exclusivity about it. Right? Jesus doesn't say, am one of the lights of the world or I am some of the bread of life. Every time he says one of these I am sayings, there is, an exclusivity about it. He alone is the way to the father, and I think it works exactly the same with I am the door for the sheep. And so I think when we read this, the first thing we probably should remind ourselves is that no matter how long we have been a Christian or how long we followed or how much wisdom we've gained or how much we pray or how much seniority we have in a Christian organization or a church, it is still not up to us to decide who's in and who's out. It is for God alone to hold that judgment. And our job is to, just follow and to just go along with what he is doing. It's to love people and to be gracious and do all the other things that Jesus commanded us. Never once are we told to be the arbiters of who's in and who's out. And I think that's a big part of what Jesus is actually doing here with this story to those particular leaders at that time.”

#NotOurJudgment
“So given the situation of the healed man, the the man blind since birth being refused entry into the synagogue by the Pharisees, it would seem to me that the most immediate application of Jesus' teaching on that day at that time, it would seem to be like he's saying to them, it is not up to you to decide who is in and who is out. I am the door for the sheep. It's only my job to decide who is in and he is out. What he's doing here is he he's rebuking that kind of religious spirit that wants to control things and kind of hold sway over all the decisions.”

#KeepInStepWithSpirit
“You should invite the spirit's guidance every day of your life. In Galatians five, Paul uses this really beautiful language. He talks about walking in step with the spirit. And in Greek, they have this tense. It's called the present active imperative. And it doesn't just mean, like, you know, say the sinner's prayer one time or just accept the Holy Spirit one time and then just live the rest of your life without thought for that. What the present active imperative tense means is keep on doing this. Live continually like this. So when Paul says walk in step with the spirit or keep in step with the spirit, he's saying, choose again and again and again to walk in step with the spirit.”
