Bible ReadingMark 9:30-37 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise." But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?" But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me."
[00:01:40] [00:10:54]Mark 10:32-45 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

[00:38:24]Observation questions- In Mark 9:30-37, what were the disciples talking about on the road, and what did Jesus place in the middle of them to answer that argument? [00:10:54]
- What details does Jesus add in Mark 10:32-34 about what will happen to him in Jerusalem?
- When James and John ask for places at Jesus’ right and left hand, what does Jesus ask them about instead? [00:28:16]
- What three pictures of humility appear across these passages: the child, the cup, and the servant? What does each picture show on the surface of the text? [00:05:57]
Interpretation questions- Jesus says that receiving a child in his name is the same as receiving him, and even the Father who sent him. What does that reveal about how Christ views the weak, the small, and the easily overlooked? [00:21:15]
- The disciples keep hearing Jesus speak about suffering, but they keep turning toward greatness and position. What does that contrast reveal about how easily people can misunderstand the kingdom of God? [00:08:00]
- Jesus speaks of drinking the cup and then goes to the cross. If the cup is God’s wrath against sin, why does that make the cross more than just an example of courage or endurance? [00:29:48]
- Jesus says, “It shall not be so among you,” when speaking about worldly power. What should that mean for how authority, leadership, and importance are understood in the church? [00:33:13]
Application questions- Ambition can make people look past real needs in front of them. Where is there a temptation right now to think more about being noticed, respected, or important than about loving actual people God has placed nearby? [00:10:02]
- Jesus took a child in his arms and made room for the little one in the middle. What might it look like this week to come down to the level of someone who is small, vulnerable, young, needy, or unable to repay kindness? [00:14:12]
- Receiving a child in Jesus’ name means more than being polite; it means making room, taking by the hand, and caring with Christ’s heart. Who in this church or in daily life might need that kind of welcome from you? [00:21:23]
- James and John asked, in effect, “What do we get?” The way of Christ asks, “What do I give?” In what area of life does that change in attitude need to happen most clearly right now: at home, at work, in church, or in hidden private habits? [00:45:25]
- The safest place for a sinner is at the foot of the cross because Jesus bore the judgment sinners deserved. When guilt, shame, or fear rises up, is there a tendency to hide from Jesus or to take refuge in him? What would it look like to run to him instead? [00:30:40]
- “It shall not be so among you” leaves no room for climbing over people, demanding one’s own way, or using others as ladders. Where might that spirit be showing up in conversation, conflict, ministry, or family life? [00:33:27]
- Mark’s life shows that a person can begin poorly and still become useful through grace. Is there any place where past failure has led to discouragement or passivity? What would it look like to believe that Christ can still make someone useful and faithful? [00:41:08]
