Humility and Vigilance: Overcoming Pride and Idleness
Devotional
Day 1: Pride as a Silent Adversary
Pride is a subtle and dangerous adversary that can lead to spiritual downfall. It often begins subtly, through complacency and self-sufficiency, and can lead to more overt sins if unchecked. Like carbon monoxide, pride can seep into our lives unnoticed, causing significant harm before we even realize it. The biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the destructive nature of pride. To avoid the pitfalls of pride, we must remain vigilant and humble, recognizing our dependence on God. By doing so, we can prevent pride from taking root in our hearts and leading us astray. [02:40]
"For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor." (Galatians 6:3-4, ESV)
Reflection: Identify an area in your life where pride might be creeping in. How can you actively practice humility in this area today?
Day 2: Discipline as an Expression of Love
God's discipline is an expression of His love, intended to correct and guide us. It is through discipline that we are molded into the likeness of Christ. Embracing discipline with humility allows us to grow spiritually and align our lives with God's will. Discipline is not a punishment but a form of love, a way for God to correct and guide us back to the right path. By submitting to God's discipline, we open ourselves to spiritual growth and transformation, becoming more like Christ in our thoughts and actions. [04:23]
"My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights." (Proverbs 3:11-12, ESV)
Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you experienced God's discipline. How can you view this experience as an opportunity for growth and transformation?
Day 3: The Mindset of Christ
Jesus exemplifies the ultimate humility and obedience. Despite His divine nature, He chose to serve and sacrifice for others. We are called to adopt this mindset, prioritizing service and humility over personal glory and recognition. Jesus' life is a powerful example of selflessness and service, showing us the path to true greatness in God's kingdom. By following His example, we can cultivate a heart of humility and obedience, seeking to serve others and glorify God in all that we do. [15:16]
"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men." (Philippians 2:5-7, ESV)
Reflection: Consider a way you can serve someone selflessly this week. How can you embody the mindset of Christ in this act of service?
Day 4: Redeeming the Time
The wise use of time is crucial in our spiritual journey. Idleness can lead to temptation and sin, so we must be intentional in how we spend our time, ensuring it is used for God's purposes and our spiritual growth. By being intentional with our time, we can avoid the pitfalls of idleness and focus on activities that honor God and nurture our spiritual growth. This includes serving others, seeking God, and engaging in practices that draw us closer to Him. [08:12]
"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16, ESV)
Reflection: Evaluate your daily schedule. What is one change you can make to ensure your time is used more intentionally for God's glory?
Day 5: Drawing Near to God
Drawing near to God and resisting the devil are essential for spiritual victory. By submitting to God and standing firm in His word, we find the strength and grace needed to overcome the challenges and temptations we face. In our spiritual journey, it is crucial to seek God's presence and rely on His strength to resist the devil's schemes. By drawing near to God, we can experience His peace and guidance, empowering us to live victoriously in the face of adversity. [34:15]
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." (James 4:7-8, ESV)
Reflection: What is one practical step you can take today to draw nearer to God and resist temptation in your life?
Sermon Summary
In today's reflection, we explored the subtle yet destructive nature of pride and its consequences, drawing lessons from the biblical account of Sodom and Gomorrah. The root of their downfall was not just the overt sins but the underlying pride, abundance, and idleness that led them astray. This serves as a cautionary tale for us today, highlighting the dangers of complacency and the importance of humility. Pride can creep into our lives like a silent killer, much like carbon monoxide, unnoticed until it causes significant harm. It is essential to remain vigilant, humble, and obedient to God's guidance to avoid such pitfalls.
We also discussed the importance of discipline and how God uses it to shape and mold us into His likeness. Discipline is not a punishment but a form of love, a way for God to correct and guide us back to the right path. It is through humility and submission to God's will that we can truly grow spiritually. The story of Jesus serves as the ultimate example of humility and obedience. Despite being God, He chose to humble Himself, taking the form of a servant, and became obedient to the point of death. This is the mindset we are called to adopt—one of selflessness, service, and humility.
Furthermore, we are reminded of the importance of using our time wisely. Idleness can lead to temptation and sin, so we must be intentional in how we spend our time, ensuring it is used for God's glory. This includes serving others, seeking God, and nurturing our spiritual growth. Lastly, we are encouraged to resist the devil and draw near to God, for in doing so, we find strength and grace to overcome the challenges we face.

Sermon Clips
And it says that the sin of Sodom was that they had become proud, that they had an abundance of food, that they were idle they had a lot of free time, and this is the sin of Sodom. And so because they were proud they had lots to eat and they had a lot of free time they got themselves into trouble. [00:59:27]
And this is how Pride Creeps in, it just comes in a small form, but it's the silent killer and they can take you down, and we don't realize it, you know the scripture speaks in Psalms and 73. the songwriter writes that time the more deals with him just like the Lord deals with us as brothers, and he chastens us he disciplines us because he loves us. [01:06:44]
Brother sisters don't despise the discipline of the Lord, discipline involves humbling, and we don't humble ourselves and we're going to get humbled. I think of the children and they respond in a proud way and they need discipline to the point that they humble themselves, and that's the only amount that God needs to give us to the point where we humble ourselves. [04:23:58]
You know there's a scripture that says fall on the Rock and be broken or The Rock will fall on you and grind you to powder. It's better to fall on the Rock and be broken than for a rock to fall on you and grind you to power we used to build retaining walls with the excavator huge four and five foot rocks weighing maybe two three tons. [05:13:04]
When we have a lot of time on our hands and we're not using the time or Redeeming the time for the Lord that we get ourselves into trouble when you got extra time me time what do you do you get on the phone you start surfing next you know you start in a way and you think you're going this way and all of a sudden you end up over here. [07:50:46]
We have to have this humble mindset one toward another, when you have a humble mindset one toward another, you care about how your brother's doing, you reach out to see how your sister is making up yeah this is what it means to be humble we don't only look out for our own interests but we also are concerned sincerely from the heart about the interests of others. [12:09:18]
He thought of others, he came as a king not to be king but to serve can you imagine someone who is a king coming and taking the form of a Slave and washing feet and humbling oneself and teaching and laying one's life down and giving and helping and going to another place because his father told him because some woman at the well was there and needed to hear something. [15:22:56]
He made himself of no reputation, something that you have to do, you have to choose to make yourself of no reputation, but the problem is that it comes so naturally for us in the world to want to become of reputation it's in all of us so people will recognize us people will appreciate us people will see the gift of God in us. [18:38:56]
He became obedient he chose to be obedient, you have to choose to be obedient it doesn't come naturally, this is how we pass the tests God gives us you know it's wonderful to spend time in the scriptures isn't it but you don't want too much honey will make one vomit so we spend time in the scriptures and we get some sweet scriptures now we have to be tested. [27:12:36]
Submit to God that means obey quickly what does it mean to submit to God it means when you're convicted when you get tested obey quickly resist the devil see Satan get them behind me you're suffering now the flesh is fighting you the word the Holy Spirit against the flesh there's a war now what are you going to do you're going to hate your flesh. [34:15:00]
He gives grace to the humble therefore submit to God resist the devil he'll flee from you draw near to God and He will draw near to you he says cleanse your hands you Sinners and purify your hearts to be double-minded this unbelievable well should I or should I well you know when I justify myself no no let's not be double-minded let's be steadfast. [35:19:19]
Humble yourself from the sight of the Lord and he's going to lift you up can you lift you up that doesn't mean you're going to become the boss get up in his life he's in a step to speak to you he's going to start to Elevate you in the spirit you'll start to become useful to him you'll go from servant to friend to lift you up from the status of servant to friend. [37:04:68]
