God watches from the heights and knows the condition of man; he summons leaders because judgment is for them when they have become a snare on the high places, spreading nets and multiplying slaughter, and he will discipline until the people acknowledge their guilt, seek his face, and earnestly seek him in their distress. [07:36]
Hosea 5:1-15 (ESV)
1 Hear this, O priests! Give ear, O house of Israel! Give attention, O house of the king! For the judgment is toward you, because you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor; 2 and the revolters have gone deep in slaughter, though I have corrected them. 3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore, you have defiled the land and committed adultery with blood. 4 Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God; for a spirit of whoredom is within them, and they know not the LORD. 5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face; they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. 6 And the pride of Israel shall be humbled, and the scepter of Judah shall depart; yet Jacob shall be brought low, and Israel be made thin, 7 From the powers of the sinner and from the hands of the wicked. 8 Blow the trumpet in Gibeah, the horn in Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth-aven; Behind you, O Benjamin! 9 Ephraim shall be desolate in the day of punishment; among the tribes of Israel I make known what is sure. 10 The princes of Judah were like those who remove the landmark; I will pour out upon them my wrath like water. 11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after filth. 12 Therefore I am like a moth to Ephraim, and like rot to the house of Judah. 13 When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to Assyria and sent to the great king; yet he is unable to heal you or to cure you of your wound. 14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, and like a young lion to the house of Judah; I, I will tear and go away; I will carry off, and there shall be none to rescue. 15 I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress they will seek me diligently.
Reflection: Where in your life have you been complicit in leading others toward the high places—practices or patterns that draw attention away from the LORD—and what is one concrete step you will take this week to confess that complicity and begin to dismantle that snare?
Leaders are gifts from God to warn, teach, and toil so that the people may be presented mature, and their labors—by the power of Christ working in them—are meant to aid perseverance, warn against falling away, and encourage holiness on the way home. [11:01]
Colossians 1:21, 28-29 (ESV)
21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in the body of his flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
Reflection: Identify one person or group (your small group, your family, or someone you mentor) whom God has placed under your care; what is one specific teaching, warning, or discipline you can offer them this week to help them persevere toward holiness?
God's eyes are in every place—he knows the hidden moments of faith as well as the secret sins—so his knowing can be a comfort when one is faithful and transparent, and a terrifying reckoning when one hides; therefore turn your hidden actions into confessed obedience and trust his searching love. [20:10]
Psalm 139:1-6 (ESV)
1 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
Reflection: Think of a secret or area of private struggle you have hidden from others; will you bring it into the light of prayer and confession today, asking God to reveal one practical accountability step you will take this week?
Religious observance without a contrite heart becomes an abomination—new moons and appointed feasts, when offered in hypocrisy or mere duty, are hated by the LORD—so outward worship must be joined to repentance and heartfelt devotion if it is to be pleasing and life-giving. [38:40]
Isaiah 1:12-14 (ESV)
12 “When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts? Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations— 13 I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
Reflection: Before you join corporate worship this weekend, take five minutes to examine your heart—what will you confess to the Lord and what one renewed posture (silence, confession, almsgiving, or verbal thanksgiving) will you adopt to ensure your worship this week is not mere duty but true devotion?
Those who move the ancient landmark—who expand their holdings by taking another’s inheritance—display covenant unfaithfulness and will face the Lord's poured-out wrath; leadership that seizes advantage rather than protects the vulnerable invites divine correction. [44:24]
Proverbs 23:10-11 (ESV)
10 Do not move the ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless, 11 for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you.
Reflection: Is there a decision at work, in your family, or in your community where gain for you would harm the vulnerable; what specific action will you refuse or reverse today to protect the rights and inheritance of those who cannot defend themselves?
Hosea 5 confronts us with the Lion who is not safe but is good. I walked through the chapter in three movements: the lion’s eye, the lion’s growl, and the lion’s teeth. First, the lion’s eye: God sees. He addresses leaders because their calling is to guard and guide, yet they had become snares on the high places, multiplying idolatry and normalizing sexual immorality. The Lord’s omniscience can comfort or terrify; He knows our quiet faithfulness as well as the sin we hide. Israel’s pride—what they celebrated publicly—became the very thing that testified against them. They sought the Lord with flocks and herds but without confession, trying religion without repentance.
Second, the lion’s growl: God warns before He strikes. Alarms sounded from south to north, signaling judgment. The princes moved ancient landmarks—greed and injustice were baked into the system—and the people felt the crush. God said He would be like a moth and like dry rot: slow, relentless discipline that erodes false securities. Israel saw the symptoms—political instability, social decay—but misdiagnosed the disease. They ran to Assyria, the butcher, instead of to the Healer.
Finally, the lion’s teeth: when the day comes, judgment is swift and no one rescues. God Himself tears and carries off. Yet the last word is hope: “until.” Until they acknowledge guilt, seek His face, and earnestly seek Him. That is the door of mercy in the middle of judgment. The same Lion who is untamed in holiness is good in His readiness to receive the contrite.
So we examine our leadership—in homes, church, workplaces. We ask what our public “pride” is, what we boast in. We listen for the growl in lesser judgments and disruptions, and we stop treating symptoms with worldly “Assyrias.” We come with honest confession and seek His face, early and earnestly. He loves those who love Him, and those who seek Him diligently find Him.
Hosea 5:1–15 — 1 “Hear this, O priests! Pay attention, O house of Israel! Give ear, O house of the king! For judgment is for you, because you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor. 2 The revolters have gone deep in slaughter; but I will discipline all of them. 3 I know Ephraim; Israel is not hidden from me. For now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore; Israel is defiled. Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. 4 For the spirit of whoredom is within them, and they know not the Lord. 5 The pride of Israel testifies to his face; Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in their guilt; Judah also shall stumble with them. 6 With their flocks and their herds they shall go to seek the Lord, but they will not find him; he has withdrawn himself from them. 7 They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord; for they have borne foreign children. Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields. 8 Blow the horn in Gibeah, the trumpet at Ramah! Sound the alarm at Beth‑aven; behind you, Benjamin! 9 Ephraim shall become desolation in the day of punishment; among the tribes of Israel I make known what is sure. 10 The princes of Judah were like those who move a landmark; I will pour out my wrath upon them like water. 11 Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he was determined to go after filth. 12 Therefore I am like a moth to Ephraim, and like rot to the house of Judah. 13 When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then Ephraim went to the Assyrian and sent to the great king; but he is not able to heal you, and he cannot cure you of your wound. 14 For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall rescue, and I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress they will seek me earnestly. 15 Then they will say, ‘Come, and let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.’
