Day 1: Hope Through Endurance
The journey to hope is not a simple or easy path. It begins with suffering, which is an inevitable part of life. This suffering, however, is not without purpose. It cultivates endurance, which in turn builds character. This character is the foundation upon which a hope that does not disappoint is built. This hope is not passive; it is an active engagement with the challenges we face, knowing that God is already working within us and for us. This assurance allows us to face difficulties with a sense of purpose and direction, trusting that God is shaping us through our trials. [02:50]
Romans 5:3-5 (ESV): "Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."
Reflection: What current challenge in your life can you view as an opportunity for God to build endurance and character within you?
Day 2: The Power of Humility and Return
The story of the prodigal son is a powerful illustration of humility and endurance. After squandering his inheritance, the younger son finds himself in a place of desperation. It is in this moment that he "comes to himself" and decides to return to his father. This decision is an act of humility and endurance, acknowledging his mistakes and choosing to seek forgiveness. Upon his return, he is not met with shame or punishment but with the open arms of a father who has been waiting for him. This is a profound image of hope, rooted in the love and forgiveness of a father who never gave up on his son. [08:39]
Luke 15:20-24 (ESV): "And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate."
Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you need to humble yourself and seek forgiveness? How can you take a step towards reconciliation today?
Day 3: Growth Through Challenges
Like T'Challa in Black Panther, we face challenges that test our character. These moments of suffering are not just obstacles but opportunities for growth and transformation. They are moments where we can choose to listen, learn, and change. As we endure these challenges, our character is shaped, and we become people of unshakable hope. This hope is not naive; it acknowledges the cost but persists because it is fueled by God's love poured into our hearts. [08:39]
James 1:2-4 (ESV): "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
Reflection: What is one challenge you are currently facing that you can view as an opportunity for growth? How can you actively engage with this challenge to allow God to shape your character?
Day 4: Persisting in Hope Amidst Injustice
In a world filled with injustice and division, we are called to persist in hope. This hope is not naive but acknowledges the cost and is fueled by God's love. It urges us to continue fighting for justice and love, knowing that ultimately, love will win. We are reminded that God's love is transformative, turning brokenness into beauty and struggle into hope. This hope is alive and active, urging us to continue the fight for justice and love. [12:30]
Isaiah 40:29-31 (ESV): "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Reflection: In what ways can you actively participate in bringing justice and love to your community? How can you be a beacon of hope in a world that often feels divided?
Day 5: God's Transformative Love
God's transformative love turns brokenness into beauty and struggle into hope. We are encouraged to keep walking, resisting, and hoping, knowing that love will ultimately prevail. This love is not passive but active, urging us to engage with the world around us and to be agents of change. As we embrace this transformative love, we become part of God's work in the world, bringing hope and healing to those around us. [12:30]
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV): "So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal."
Reflection: How can you allow God's transformative love to work through you today? What is one practical step you can take to bring hope and healing to someone in your life?
Sermon Summary
In today's reflection, we delve into the profound message of hope and endurance as illustrated in Romans 5 and the parable of the prodigal son. The scripture from Romans reminds us that the journey to hope is not a straightforward path of comfort and ease. Instead, it begins with suffering, which cultivates endurance, builds character, and ultimately births a hope that does not disappoint. This hope is not a passive waiting but an active engagement with the challenges we face, knowing that God is already working within us and for us.
The story of the prodigal son further exemplifies this journey. The younger son, after squandering his inheritance, finds himself at rock bottom, feeding pigs and longing for home. It is in this moment of desperation that he "comes to himself" and decides to return to his father. This decision to return is an act of endurance and humility. Upon his return, he is not met with shame or punishment but with the open arms of a father who has been waiting for him. This is a powerful image of hope—hope rooted in the love of a father who never gave up on his son.
In our own lives, we often find ourselves in situations where we feel exhausted and defeated, much like the prodigal son or T'Challa from Black Panther. Yet, these moments of suffering and challenge are opportunities for growth and transformation. They are moments where we can choose to listen, to learn, and to change. As we endure, our character is shaped, and we become people of unshakable hope. This hope is not naive; it acknowledges the cost but persists because it is fueled by God's love poured into our hearts.
In a world filled with injustice, division, and suffering, we are called to keep walking, to keep resisting, and to keep hoping. We are reminded that God's love is transformative, turning brokenness into beauty and struggle into hope. This hope is alive and active, urging us to continue the fight for justice and love, knowing that ultimately, love will win.

Sermon Clips
By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us sets us right with God makes us fit for God we have it all together with God because of our master Jesus and that's not all we throw open our doors to God and discover the same amount the same moment that he has already thrown his doors open to us. [00:00:03]
We continue to shout our praise even when we're hemmed in with troubles because we know troubles can develop passionate patience in us. And now that patience in turn forges the temper still of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we're never left feeling shortchanged. [00:00:58]
But the scripture here in Romans tells us that the path to real lasting hope doesn't begin with comfort. That it begins with suffering. That it winds through endurance. That it builds our character. That it gives us virtue. And finally, finally, it gives birth to hope. Hope that doesn't disappoint. [00:02:17]
And then he came to his senses in some translations it says he came to himself and he thought how many of my father's hired hands have more than enough food and here I am starving to death I will get up and I will go to my father and I will say to him father I have sinned against heaven and I've sinned against you. [00:04:18]
And while he was still a long ways off his father saw him and he was moved with compassion and the father ran to him and hugged him and kissed him and then his son said his the son said you you father I've sinned against heaven and you I no longer deserve to be your son. [00:05:00]
He doesn't find shame he doesn't find punishment he doesn't find a father who's wanting to make him be a servant no what he finds is a man who sees him yet a long way off someone who was looking for him before he ever got close and when he gets there he wraps him up in a robe and he gives him a ring. [00:07:13]
You see, that's hope. It's a hope that doesn't disappoint because it's rooted in the love of a father who never gave up on him. And as with many of the scriptures that we have journeyed through in this sermon series, in this Lenten series, you see, I think this wraps up the gospel in a nutshell. [00:07:54]
And in this, T 'Challa is confident, he's steady, but then he faces his greatest challenge, which is Kilmore, a man shaped by suffering and filled with anger and hungry for justice. And T 'Challa is defeated and left for dead, stripped of his power. He's uncertain and is suffering. [00:08:56]
And we become people of unshakable hope. Hope that isn't naive. Hope that knows that it comes with a cost. But hope that still shows up. Think about the people in our own community who are holding on to hope in the face of overwhelming odds, trans youth fighting for their truth, immigrants seeking safety, parents working three jobs. [00:11:03]
God is with you, and God is still in the business of turning brokenness into beauty, of turning pain into purpose, and struggle into hope. A hope that does not disappoint. So today, I encourage you, I implore you, keep walking. Keep resisting, keep hoping, because love will win, because grace will still flow. [00:13:07]
We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand, out in the wide open space of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise. There's more to come. We can't round up enough cont - to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit. [00:00:44]
And soon he's at the rock bottom broke alone feeding pigs starving to death he's suffering but then something changes i love when the scripture says that he comes to himself and he remembers home he doesn't know if he'll be accepted but he chooses to start walking you see for me this story is a lot like a lot of our stories.
