The Holy Spirit is not something abstract. He is a person, as much God as the Father and the Son, present to convict people of sin, bring them into relationship with Jesus Christ, and empower them to live for him. His work does not stop at conversion. As counselor, helper, teacher, and advocate, he supplies the power believers need to function effectively in the day they are living in.
Pentecost makes that purpose plain. The rushing sound, tongues of fire, and speaking in other languages were wonderful, but the spectacular signs were not the whole point. The Holy Spirit came to give power: power to be free from sin, power to serve, and power to become the people God calls his children to be. A family history, an addiction, or the need for peer approval does not have to rule a new creation in Christ.
Salvation and the infilling of the Holy Spirit are presented as distinct works of grace. Repentance opens the way, and surrender places the care and control of a believer’s life into God’s hands. God invites that surrender but never forces it. Fear of what the Spirit might require can leave Christians holding tightly to the very things that hinder his work.
The wind and fire of Pentecost also point toward purging and purifying. Grace does more than offer forgiveness; it teaches believers to say no to ungodliness. This cleansing is not a matter of clothes, jewelry, or religious appearances. God starts on the inside. Human responsibility matters, but gold does not purify itself. The believer surrenders, and the Spirit supplies the cleansing power.
The fruit of the Spirit gives visible evidence of that work. Biblical warnings become invitations to overcome rather than reasons to give up. Spirit-empowered witness includes bold proclamation, but it also means a changed life, endurance in suffering, and forgiveness toward enemies. Jesus and Stephen show that this power carries God’s people through difficult times, not merely spectacular moments.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The Spirit Empowers More Than Spectacle. Tongues, prophecy, healing, and miracles are affirmed, but none exhausts the Holy Spirit’s purpose. His power reaches into ordinary obedience, freedom from sin, and faithful service when circumstances turn hard. Spiritual excitement can miss the point if it never becomes a life strengthened to follow Christ. [56:48]
- 2. Surrender Includes Both Care And Control. Asking Christ for forgiveness is not the same as willingly placing the rest of life under his direction. God does not force maturity or override the choices of his people. A deeper relationship requires surrendering the right to call the shots, not merely asking God to take care of the consequences. [59:45]
- 3. Grace Teaches A Different Way Of Living. Grace offers salvation, but it also teaches believers to refuse ungodliness and worldly passions. Christ gave himself to redeem a people who belong to him, not to leave them owned by everything else. Waiting for his return therefore carries a present call to self-controlled, upright, godly living. [1:09:49]
- 4. Cleansing Begins Inside Rather Than Outside. Religious rules about clothing and jewelry can produce an acceptable appearance without touching a mean spirit. The Holy Spirit works deeper, exposing attitudes, habits, and actions that dishonor God. His cleansing is not cosmetic; he purifies believers to empower them. [1:18:18]
- 5. Faithful Witness Can Endure Great Suffering. The power promised in Acts includes more than boldness to speak or anointing to minister. Stephen’s forgiveness while being stoned shows a life bearing witness to Christ under terrible pressure. The Holy Spirit strengthens believers to remain faithful in difficult times as well as good times. [1:23:25]
