Sermon Summary

The Holy Spirit stands first as a person, not a force, not electricity, not gravity, not some “halfway Holy Ghost.” The Holy Ghost is the third person of the Godhead, the Spirit of truth, the Comforter, the Helper, the Standby, the one who lives in the believer while Jesus walked with the disciples. His character shows up in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, and his gifts show up through wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, tongues, and interpretation.

The presence of the Holy Ghost is fresh every single time. His presence is not stale, not worn out, not something a person gets tired of like ordinary company. The Holy Spirit paints Jesus on the canvas of the heart, writes the Word on the inside, and never brings some brand-new thing outside the Word. The water of the Word turns into the wine of the Spirit, and the wine does not replace the water.

The relationship with the Holy Ghost begins with acknowledgment. The Holy Spirit must be acknowledged like a real friend, the friend who sticks closer than a brother and who calls a person out on their junk. The inner man does not tell a person to do wrong, because the Holy Spirit communes with the human spirit and leads into all truth. The invisible connection may feel like WiFi, because the believer cannot see him with natural eyes, but connection proves presence.

The promise of the Holy Ghost belongs to every believer and to their children. The question is not whether God is willing, because the promise is already given. The question is whether a person will yield. Hunger and thirst are what the Holy Ghost responds to, not background, money, family story, or any religious performance.

Jesus promises another Comforter, “another like me,” and tells the disciples to go, tarry, wait, and receive. Receiving requires obedience to go, patience to wait, and faith to receive. Trust refuses to tell God how the gift must be wrapped. The Holy Ghost cannot be managed by the brain, boxed into a preference, or reduced to tongues.

Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost and fire. That fire consumes without destroying, burns off dross, addictions, comparison, and waste material, and leaves a person streamlined to run. The overflow is never just “me and mine,” because vessels are filled so living water can flow through them to others. The evidence is power, power to live right, witness, heal, overcome, and speak the Word like Peter did after Pentecost.

The joy of the Lord is not earthly mood or fake positivity. Joy is evidence of salvation, the language of faith, and the sound that laughs at famine and destruction because God’s Word is already true.
