Jesus tells His disciples that the Helper is coming as He prepares to depart, and He does not hide the hard news. Jesus says opposition will come, people will reject them, and some will even think they are serving God by persecuting them. The Holy Spirit, however, is not given merely for enjoyment or inspiration. The Holy Spirit is given so God’s people can witness and serve the Lord when resistance comes.

The Helper is the ever present parakletos, the One called alongside. The word carries the sense of helper, comforter, advocate, consoler, and one who comes to aid. Jesus paid the debt His people could not pay, and the Holy Spirit comes alongside believers to help them walk out the truth Jesus secured. The Holy Spirit is another Helper of the same kind as Jesus, not a replacement of a different kind. The Holy Spirit is God with His people, while Christ is their advocate with the Father.

God’s people are called to learn, remember, and testify of Jesus in the same way.

Jesus also prepares His disciples for suffering by telling them beforehand. The truth of Christ becomes deeply comforting when betrayal, slander, false accusation, or loss of favor comes. Christ knows the fellowship of suffering, and His people can come boldly to Him for help in time of need. The Holy Spirit also gives wisdom for the moment, showing believers how and what to say before authorities, critics, and hostile people. Truth without love can be like an ear of corn used to feed chickens or used to hit them in the head. The Holy Spirit gives both truth and the right application.

Acts shows the promise working itself out. Peter, once fearful, stands before rulers filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly names Jesus as the rejected stone, the risen Christ, and the only name by which people must be saved.
