The modern temptation says church should make people who do not know God feel comfortable. The cross says something different. Every great thing has an awkwardity to it at the beginning, and when a person comes into the gathered church, that person should know something different is happening here. The church should not be bashful about doing church things, wearing faith publicly, and refusing to be ashamed of the gospel.

The Holy Spirit forms the church. The church did not begin with human strategy, fancy marketing, pyrotechnics, camels, surveys, or sharper programming. The church began with divine power and is held together by the will and power of God himself operating through his Spirit. The Spirit calls people to Christ and knits them into one body, both in the global church across all ages and places, and in the local church where believers live close enough to work together for the gospel.

Ephesians 2 says Christ brings near those who were far off by his blood. Jesus himself is the peace of the church. Addicted people, troubled people, anxious people, estranged people, and people with every kind of difficulty are brought into one body because nobody comes to God who is not sick. The blood of Jesus breaks down the dividing wall of hostility, making Jews and Gentiles one new man, and making peace through the cross.

The Spirit also forms the church by enabling actual unity, not faux friendly unity. The body of Christ is meant to function like a human body, with all the parts coordinated. Ephesians 4 calls the church to humility, gentleness, patience, love, and eagerness to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
