Yet Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit’s arrival unlocks “greater things” than even His earthly ministry. What if the life you’ve settled for is merely the consolation prize? The curtain hides not chaos, but a deeper relationship. [30:12]

Comfort can become its own kind of curtain. Like a contestant on Let’s Make a Deal, a person can hold tightly to what is familiar, even when something greater may be waiting on the other side. Faith can settle into a safe compartment, where God gets a certain amount of time and influence but does not interrupt the rest of life. The Holy Spirit can feel like the risky choice because he has often been made weird, mysterious, or pushed off to the side.

Jesus does not treat the Holy Spirit as optional. In the upper room, Jesus tells his disciples that those who believe in him will do the works he has done, and even greater things, because he is going to the Father. Jesus then makes the shocking claim that it is for their good that he goes away, because the Advocate will come. The promise is clear: the Holy Spirit living in a believer is better than Jesus walking beside that believer on earth.

The gap between receiving salvation and being led by the Spirit can be very real. Grace and forgiveness are not less than enough, but Jesus offers salvation plus, grace plus, and life to the full. The Spirit does not force himself into a life that does not want him. Self can fill so much space that there is no room left for the Spirit to fill.

The Holy Spirit is not a holy guilt trip. His confrontation does not shame a person into hiding but reaches out a helping hand and moves that person forward. Communion remembers Christ’s body and blood, but it also remembers the full promise Christ made: greater things are possible through the Holy Spirit. God is not stingy with his presence, and he gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask.
