Live Holy Lives in Light of Christ’s Return

Peter defines a believer as someone who lives a holy life, and that holy life does not come from personal opinion or from whatever the world says is normal. God created life, so God knows how life is lived best. The Bible is not just advice, because God does not have opinions. God knows, and when the world disagrees with God, the world is wrong.

Peter stirs up the sincere mind of the elect exiles by way of reminder. The mind has to be active. The believer must not outsource thinking, whether to people, culture, Google, or AI. Peter calls the church back to the words of the prophets and the command of Jesus through the apostles. Those words say that Christ is coming back, the day of the Lord is coming, and God will judge the world.

The false teachers mock that promise. The scoffers say, “Where is the promise of his coming?” They say life just keeps going, Jesus has not returned, and there is no judgment. Their way sounds attractive because it lets people blend in, avoid trouble, and live by “live and let live.” Their teaching says religion is private, morality is personal, tolerance is the highest virtue, and nobody has the right to tell anyone else that life is wrong.

Peter says those teachers deliberately overlook the flood. The world has not always just continued the same. God judged the earth in Noah’s day, and people perished. The rainbow means God will not judge again by flood, but it does not mean God will never judge. By the same word of God, the heavens and earth are stored up for fire.

God’s delay is not slowness. God is patient, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. God is love, yes, but that does not mean God will ignore evil forever. God’s kindness is meant to lead to repentance, not to make sin safe.

Christ’s return changes how life must be lived now. Jesus could come today, even if the heart quietly assumes there is still time. The holy life cannot be postponed. The church must live set apart, refuse to blend in, speak truth in love, and call people to repent because God is patient, but not forever.
