The COVID pandemic revealed how easily contamination spreads, yet our focus on external precautions often masked deeper vulnerabilities. Just as a sparkling microwave can hide grime inside, religious rituals can disguise inner decay. Jesus confronts hollow holiness, urging scrutiny of the heart’s condition over performative purity. True defilement begins not with unclean hands but with unchecked desires, envy, or pride festering within. Holiness starts where no hand sanitizer reaches: the raw, unguarded places of the soul. “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” (Mark 7:20–23, ESV)

Jesus condemns holiness that prioritizes reputation over repentance, image over integrity. The Pharisees’ flaw wasn’t their discipline but their delusion: mistaking rule-keeping for righteousness. God seeks not spotless performances but surrendered hearts willing to expose their decay to His light. [28:27]

Jesus warns that what we ingest spiritually—gossip, greed, resentment—shapes our souls more than any ritual. A heart feasting on comparison, outrage, or lust will inevitably vomit sin. Holiness demands curating our mental diet, rejecting what poisons love for God and neighbor. [33:48]

Day 4: Cuddle Curtains and the Illusion of Safety

COVID’s “cuddle curtains” symbolized our futile attempts to control contamination. Similarly, self-righteousness tricks us into believing we can quarantine ourselves from sin’s reach through rules or judgment. Yet the virus of pride infects even the most disciplined. True holiness isn’t a barrier against “sinners” but a humble reliance on Christ’s cleansing, which frees us to embrace others without fear. [23:51]

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.’ […] But the tax collector […] said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner!’” (Luke 18:10–11, 13, ESV)

Day 5: The Holy Spirit’s N95 Mask

Pandemic masks filtered air; Christ’s Spirit filters our hearts. Holiness isn’t self-generated purity but a daily surrender to His purifying presence. Just as N95s required proper use, we must “fit” our lives to the Spirit’s guidance—blocking toxic influences, inhaling Scripture, exhaling prayer. This isn’t legalism but lifesaving reliance on the only One who can sterilize sin’s contagion. [32:10]

“Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1, ESV)

Sermon Summary

The image of COVID contamination sets up the deeper issue Jesus is getting at. Germs are not the only things that spread. Attitudes, behaviors, desires, and habits can get caught too. Scripture reveals a holy God, pure, undefiled, morally perfect, and completely good, while human beings are infected by sin and unholy.

God calls his people to “be holy because I am holy.” Israel received sacrifices, reverent practices, purity laws, and ethical commands as ways to pursue holiness. Those practices gave Israel cultural and moral distinction. But Jesus comes and reframes the pursuit of holiness so that Jews and Gentiles can become the people of God together without turning holiness into cultural superiority.

Jesus says plainly that it is not what goes into a person that defiles them, but what comes out. The disciples treat that clear statement like a parable, and Jesus rebukes their dullness. The issue is not food going into the stomach. The issue is evil coming out of the heart in thoughts, desires, impulses, actions, conduct, and habits.

Jesus does not throw away holiness. Holiness still matters to God. But Jesus exposes a distorted holiness that cleans the outside while ignoring the inside. The dirty microwave picture captures the point. The outside can look fine, but the inside can be filthy. Clothes, customs, rituals, church attendance, songs, and raised hands can all become a veneer if the heart remains contaminated.

The Pharisees created a bounded set, a way of deciding who was in and who was out by outward markers. Their holiness code was rooted in disgust for their neighbor, not closeness to God. True holiness is not separation away from people. True holiness is setting apart unto God.

Christ becomes the ultimate sacrifice, and holiness begins with surrender to him. Only God can wash, purify, and make a person clean from the inside out. Yet God also calls his people to participate by feeding the heart with what is true, noble, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy, and by guarding the heart because everything flows from it.

The spiritual pandemic today is not COVID, but contaminated hearts and minds. Twenty four seven news, social media, binge watching, pornography, outrage, envy, lust, fear, and anxiety feed the heart every day. Legalism is not the answer, and total permissiveness is not the answer either. Biblical holiness means surrender, spiritual practices, guarded consumption, and a refusal to let self righteousness attach itself to good habits.

We have to recognize that if we're gonna pursue holiness, the first thing and the foremost thing is that it's rooted in surrender to God. You and I are incapable of becoming holy. Sin is still a present reality in this world. But what Jesus' death does, what his sacrifice does, is allows us to be made white as snow. Amen. Right? It starts with us surrendering our life for Christ and asking him to wash us, clean us, and purify us from the inside out.”

“But Jesus calls them out on this because what they were doing was they were creating a holiness standard that was rooted in disgust for their neighbor. They wanted to be apart from the gentiles. They didn't wanna be set apart to be holy unto God. They wanted to be set apart and distant from their neighbor. If our pursuit of holiness, if we're evaluating things that we do to set ourselves apart for God or unto God, if those things are fueling greater aversion, distaste, dislike, and even hatred for people that God loves and cares about, we are doing holiness wrong. Let me say that again. If we have a holiness code that is trying to set us apart and we are being motivated by our disdain for the world, we're doing holiness wrong. Because holiness is not about separating ourselves from people, it's about drawing closer to God. We have the wrong vision, we have the wrong heart, and the wrong mentality.”

“Sadly, what is commonplace in most of our churches today is either a low pursuit of holiness, a legalistic approach to holiness, or a self righteous approach. None of these things are what scripture gives us or what Jesus teaches us. But biblical holiness still matters to God, and it should still matter to us. Jesus tells us in our passage, watch out. Do not become defiled and corrupted by evil and sin. When the COVID nineteen pandemic broke out, all of us became a lot more serious about protecting ourselves from the virus, protecting our loved ones from the virus. The problem is is we're facing this spiritual pandemic today. What are we doing to protect ourselves? Parents, what are we doing to protect our children?”
