Our thoughts possess a profound power to either build us up or break us down. They are not merely passive events but active forces that shape our reality and determine our spiritual trajectory. When left unchecked, negative or fearful thoughts can quickly hijack the joy God intends for us to live in. This internal battle is constant, but we are not left without a strategy. We have been given the tools to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, starting with the recognition of this critical battle. [03:57]
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.
(Proverbs 23:7a, KJV)
Reflection: What is one recurring negative thought pattern that you have noticed tends to steal your sense of peace and joy? How might recognizing this pattern as a "joy hijacker" be the first step toward taking it captive?
Our minds are constantly being influenced by the world around us, much like clothing picks up dust and dirt throughout the day. This is why a one-time experience with God’s truth is not enough; we require daily, intentional renewal. Just as we wash our physical garments regularly, we must cleanse our minds with the truth of Scripture to counteract the world’s contamination. This ongoing renewal is essential for maintaining a godly perspective and protecting our joy. [09:15]
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
(Romans 12:2, ESV)
Reflection: In the busyness of your daily routine, what is one practical way you can create space for your mind to be renewed by God's Word this week?
True meditation is not about emptying the mind, but about filling it with the right things. It is the practice of intentionally ruminating on, or “chewing on,” the truth of Scripture. This is not a passive reading but an active engagement with God’s Word, allowing it to saturate our thoughts and guide our actions. As we meditate on what God has said, we align our lives with His will, which is the pathway to a prosperous and joyful life. [11:54]
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
(Joshua 1:8, ESV)
Reflection: Is there a specific promise or command from Scripture that you feel invited to “chew on” and apply more fully in your life right now?
Our thoughts naturally drift toward earthly concerns—what we lack, what might go wrong, or how we can please others. This focus inevitably leads to anxiety and hijacked joy. We are called to intentionally redirect our focus, to set our minds on the things of God and His Kingdom. This is a conscious choice to tune our mental frequency to heaven’s perspective, prioritizing what God values over what the world or our flesh desires. [18:05]
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
(Colossians 3:2, ESV)
Reflection: When you consider your current worries or goals, which one most needs to be surrendered and reframed through the lens of “What does God value in this situation?”
Thoughts arrive in a flash, but we have the God-given authority to decide which ones we will entertain and which ones we will reject. Taking a thought captive means consciously holding it up to the truth of Christ and His Word. We are to filter every idea through the grid of Philippians 4:8, asking if it is true, honorable, and pure. This disciplined practice protects our hearts and allows us to produce good fruit from a mind centered on God. [34:29]
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.
(2 Corinthians 10:5, ESV)
Reflection: Using the list in Philippians 4:8 as a filter, what is one thought from today that you needed to take captive and replace with a thought that is true and honorable?
A series titled "Hijacked Joy" identifies anything that steals God-given joy as a “joy hijacker” and names thought patterns as a primary thief. Ruminating—chewing on the same ideas over and over—becomes destructive when the mind fixates on fear, failure, or worldly approval. The mind needs ongoing renewal, modeled by Romans 12:2, because exposure to news, culture, and daily pressures piles up like dirty clothes that require repeated washing. Meditation on Scripture and deliberate mental tuning toward what is above redirect rumination toward life and fruitfulness; Joshua 1:8 and Philippians 4:8 provide concrete categories for what to chew on.
Renewal happens through steady spiritual practices: reading the Bible, pondering what it actually says, and setting intentions to think on what honors God. Thought life functions like a battlefield, and 2 Corinthians 10 commands taking every thought captive to obedience in Christ—rejecting intrusive lies the moment they appear. The talk contrasts harmless thinking with harmful rumination, using the cow metaphor to show that ruminating is neutral; its moral weight depends on the content. When thoughts align with God’s truth—what is true, honorable, pure, lovely, and praiseworthy—inner fruit increases and joy remains intact. Conversely, dwelling on what culture praises, personal grievances, or imagined rejection reroutes decisions, breeds anxiety, and drains spiritual joy.
Practical instruction emphasizes three moves: meditate on Scripture day and night, intentionally set the mind on heavenly things instead of earthly anxieties, and actively seize and evaluate each intrusive thought against Christ’s obedience. These disciplines produce spiritual clarity, stronger decision-making, and the “complete joy” Jesus promises in John 15 when life stays connected to the Vine. The message closes with a direct challenge: refuse to let intrusive thoughts hijack joy; run every mental image through God’s standard, chew on what honors him, and discard the rest.
Meditate on it day and night. Why? What happens when we're meditating on the word of God? Well, then it tells you, you will be careful to do according to all that is written in it. Then, you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. As you're meditating on what God says, and you're thinking about what he tells us to do, we're able to make the decisions that please him. We're able to make decisions that honor him because we're having it present. And when we honor God, success follows.

We must set our mind to the things of God. We must set our mind to the things of God. This is an intentional purposing of setting it to the right frequency. Okay? Colossians chapter number three, you write it down. It's gonna come up on the screen. Colossians chapter number three verse number two. And this is what it says, set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. Set your mind on the things that are above.

Thoughts come like a flash. The thoughts come in like a flash, but then we've got to decide to keep it or reject it. They come in super fast, and then you choose, keep this thought, meditate on this thought, or reject this thought. We can't stop our head from thinking. It just happens. But we can prevent us from chewing on it. We can choose what we're gonna chew on. And when the thought comes in, you could be at Publix and a thought comes in, nope, that's not god. Nope, that's not this. I'm not gonna think about it.

when we turn on the TV, when we turn on the radio, when we go into the office, when we go into the grocery store, when we go to places we see and hear what's going on, it begins to affect our thoughts. It begins to affect our mind. So we need constant renewal to get back to the place of what God has us or wants us to be thinking about. Our mind needs renewal. So then comes the question, how do we renew our mind? How do we do this? How do we deal with our thoughts? And if ruminating is not the issue, but what we ruminate on, if that's the issue, how do we do or chew on the right thing? Here's number one. We must meditate on the word.

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth. How many of you know that it's very, very, very difficult to speak something different than what you were thinking at the moment? It's why sometimes we have conversation with somebody and when we started thinking of what we're gonna respond, we totally missed what he was even telling us. Like, you ever rebuttled somebody and they tell you, I just told you that. Were you not listening? And I wasn't. I was trying to think about what I was gonna say next. Alright. Anyways, do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth.

What God says about our family. What God says about our children. What God says. That's what we need to ruminate on. And in order to be able to do that, we gotta read it first. We gotta know what it says. We've gotta pay attention to it. And then we've gotta purposely set our mind to it and think about God, think about what he says. Why? So that then we can produce the proper fruit.

What did God call you to do? God called you to do x, y, or z, go do it faithfully and honor him doing it, he'll take care of the rest. What area, what arena did God call you to be in? Did God call you to be in a hospital? Did God call you to be in the courts? Did God call you to be in a school? Did God call you to be in the grocery store? Did God call you to be in the mechanic shop? Whatever God gifted you with as a talent, as a gift, and you do it to honor him, you walk in joy.

I can't tell you how many professionals I've met that when they ask you what you do for a living and say, oh, I pastor a church, and they're like, oh. And it it gets they're like they just assume that you maybe probably weren't educated because there's lot of people that think that only uneducated people are the ones that need God. No, bro. Like, the reality is that all of us need God, and the more education you got, the more you need him. Sorry. It's another sermon. We can get so caught up in what do people think? What do people say? What do people do? No. No. What does God say about you?
