The High Priest: Security and Certainty in Christ

Hebrews brings the argument to its bottom line: believers have such a high priest. Christ is seated at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven, ministering not in a man-made tent but in the true tent the Lord set up. Christ’s heavenly ministry gives real security because the priest who represents sinners before God comes from heaven and can bring them there.

Christ offers a better gift because he offers himself. The Levitical priests brought incense, lambs, bulls, and sacrifices according to the law, but their gifts could never be the final reality. Christ becomes both the high priest and the Lamb of God. John’s picture of the Word made flesh shows that the tabernacle “touched down” among humanity, and the Lamb came to take away sin.

The old tabernacle, its ceremonies, and its sacrifices served as copies and shadows of heavenly things. A shadow needs a real object behind it, and a copy of a masterwork is never the masterwork itself. Christ fulfills every sketch, signpost, and foreshadow in the Old Testament because all the promises of God are yes and amen in him. The danger for the Hebrews was returning to an insufficient picture when the substance had come.

Christ also mediates a better covenant enacted on better promises. Jeremiah’s new-covenant promise does not rest on an external law or on a covenant that sinful people broke. God writes his law on hearts, brings his people into covenant relationship with himself, forgives iniquity, and remembers sin no more. Christ alone can make those promises certain because his blood does more than meet an old-covenant requirement. His blood absolves guilt and brings sinners into favor with God.

The priesthood of Christ leaves no room for another mediator, whether a religious official, personal performance, or law-defined standard of holiness. The law exposes sin and casts a shadow, but Christ is the substance. Christ’s ministry is complete because he sat down, and continual because he lives to intercede. His finished and ongoing work assures struggling saints that he will complete the work he began.

Christ’s faithfulness alone secures favor with God. Isaiah pictures Christ putting on righteousness and zeal to go to war against sin, so that his people may wear robes of righteousness before God. Christ received wrath that was not his, and sinners receive a favor they could never earn. Security does not mean a painless life, but Christ’s faithful priesthood gives certainty in the middle of pain.
