UNSHAKEN: The Helmet of Salvation to be Unshaken | Matt Vanderwarker | Berean Bible Church

Paul’s command to “take the helmet of salvation” comes in the middle of a real war, not an easy peacetime existence. The battle is often fought in the mind, where horrific thoughts, shame from the past, discouragement in the present, and hopelessness about the future can all try to move believers away from what is true. The helmet protects more than mental function. It protects thinking, understanding, confidence, and the way life gets processed before it leads to action.

Salvation, in this picture, cannot be collapsed into one moment in the past. God did save His people from sin’s penalty when He washed, sanctified, and justified them through Christ. God is also saving His people right now from sin’s power, keeping them in His hand and transforming them day by day. God will one day save His people fully from sin’s presence, when death, mourning, crying, pain, cancer, hurt, and every broken thing are gone for good.

The helmet of salvation means thinking and standing from the reality of God’s saving work instead of allowing the battle to define God, self, or the future. Bob’s guilt cannot have the final word because Jesus settled his sin on the cross. Bill’s slow growth cannot prove that God has left him because the Spirit is still working, keeping, and transforming him. Sally’s pain cannot mean that this life is all there is because her story ends with seeing Jesus face to face.

Satan’s accusations must be answered by the cross, not by personal strength. Satan’s claim that change will never come must be answered by the God who is still working. Satan’s threats that everything will fall apart must be answered by the God who finishes what He begins. The reality of salvation gives believers something solid to stand on: God has redeemed them, God is keeping them, and God will fully rescue them. Life is hard, but God has made a way for His people to stand unshaken.
