Bible ReadingLuke 8:26–39 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.” For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned. When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Then it says, “I will return to my house from which I came.” And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.

[01:01:14]Observation questions- What details in Luke 8:26–29 show how completely the demons had damaged the man’s life—his body, mind, home, relationships, and dignity? [31:09]
- What do the demons call Jesus, and what do their begging words reveal about what they believe Jesus has authority to do? [35:43]
- What contrasts does Luke give between the townspeople’s response to Jesus and the restored man’s response to Jesus?
- What specific changes can be seen in the man when the crowd finds him sitting at Jesus’ feet? [58:17]
Interpretation questions- Why does Luke place unclean tombs, pigs, and unclean spirits together in this account? What does this setting communicate about the darkness Jesus entered?
- The demons know that Jesus is the Son of God and that judgment is coming, yet they do not trust or obey Him. What does this show about the difference between knowing true things about Jesus and personally trusting Jesus? [35:43]
- Why is it important that the demons must ask Jesus for permission before entering the pigs? How does this correct the idea that Jesus and Satan are equal opponents? [45:11]
- Jesus tells the healed man to declare what God has done, and the man declares what Jesus has done. What is Luke showing readers about the identity of Jesus? [53:21]
Application questions- Evil promises freedom, pleasure, or control, but it ultimately brings shame, isolation, and destruction. Are there sinful patterns, media, relationships, or habits that may be pulling you away from clarity, peace, dignity, or community? What would turning from them toward Christ look like this week? [51:41]
- The townspeople saw Jesus’ power but asked Him to leave because they were afraid. Are there places where Jesus’ authority feels uncomfortable because it may disrupt your comfort, priorities, finances, or choices? How can you welcome His rule instead of keeping Him at a distance? [53:51]
- The healed man wanted to be near Jesus, and Jesus sent him home to tell others what God had done. Who in your home, workplace, neighborhood, or family might need to hear a simple and honest account of what Christ has done in your life?
- Believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit and belong to God because they were bought with a price. How can this truth shape the way you respond to fear, temptation, shame, or spiritual anxiety? [56:35]
- Satan may tempt, harass, and hinder believers, but Christ in His people is greater than the one in the world. Where do you most need to replace fear with confidence in Christ’s authority? [57:34]
- Jesus restores what sin tries to destroy. Is there an area of your life where you feel broken, ashamed, confused, or defined by old labels? How does being known and loved by Jesus speak a better word over that area? [01:05:38]
- Jesus was abandoned on the cross so that His people would never finally be abandoned. When have you felt alone or forgotten, and what would it look like to remember this week that Jesus is the Friend who does not leave? [01:02:15]
