James sets wisdom before the heart as something that gets shown in the way a person lives. A person may know facts, quote Bible verses, or claim to believe the right things, but wisdom shows up in conduct, motives, and relationships. Salvation works the same way. Salvation that is known is salvation that is shown. A person can know he is going to heaven, not by comparing himself to somebody worse or hoping his good outweighs his bad, but by repenting of sin and receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
James gives two kinds of wisdom. Earthly wisdom is earthly, sensual, and demonic. Earthly wisdom starts in the heart with bitter envy and strife. Bitter envy does not merely notice somebody else’s car, house, job, or bank account. Bitter envy wants to pull somebody down so somebody else can get ahead. Strife follows right behind it, because a heart that wants to climb over people will wound people.
Earthly wisdom shows up when the world’s opinion becomes the standard, when feelings rule over what God says, and when knowledge about Jesus never becomes commitment to Jesus. The devil believes the facts about Jesus, but the devil does not surrender to Jesus as Lord. Earthly wisdom brings confusion and every evil work. Backbiting, whispering, gossip, fighting, power struggles, and control can wreck a church, a home, and a life. God is not the author of confusion. God is a God of order.
James sets wisdom from above against all of that mess. Heavenly wisdom is first pure, and purity begins with forgiveness. Christ forgives the sinner who comes to Him, and God keeps cleansing the believer who confesses sin and walks with Him. A pure heart becomes a peaceful heart. God’s wisdom seeks peace with God and peace with people, rather than always having to get its own way.
Wisdom from above is gentle, reasonable, approachable, and easy to work with. Abraham’s yielding to Lot pictures a heart that values peace over personal rights. God’s people do not have to have things their own way, but they must seek God’s way. Heavenly wisdom is full of mercy and good fruits. It treats people with grace when justice might give a right to condemn. It blesses, encourages, and builds up rather than tears down.
James says this wisdom is without partiality and without hypocrisy. God offers salvation through Jesus Christ without playing favorites, and a life shaped by God’s wisdom does not put on a show. Jesus Himself is the perfect picture of wisdom from above: pure, peaceable, gentle, merciful, and true. Christ gives that wisdom to those who know Him, ask Him, and yield themselves to walk like Him.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Salvation known is salvation shown
Salvation does not rest on being a little better than somebody else or hoping the scales come out right. Christ gives eternal life to those who receive Him as Savior and Lord. A life that truly belongs to Jesus begins to show Jesus in its conduct, desires, and direction. [49:47]
- 2. Bitter envy always produces strife
Bitter envy wants somebody else lowered so self can be lifted up. Strife grows wherever a person treats relationships like a ladder to climb. God’s wisdom does not need to take notches out of others in order to move forward. [54:41]
- 3. Earthly wisdom brings confusion and damage
Earthly wisdom follows the world, obeys feelings, and can hold Bible knowledge without surrendering to Christ. Gossip, backbiting, whispering, and power struggles are not small matters because they wreck churches, homes, and lives. God brings order where earthly wisdom brings a mess. [1:06:10]
- 4. Purity grows from continual forgiveness
A pure heart is not a heart that never needs mercy. Christ forgives at salvation, and God calls His people to come back quickly when sin breaks fellowship. Forgiveness produces the calmness of a heart at peace with God. [1:08:33]
- 5. Heavenly wisdom builds others up
Mercy does not insist that people receive everything they deserve. Good fruits seek to bless, encourage, and make another person’s life better. Jesus shows this wisdom perfectly, and those who follow Him are called to carry themselves like Him. [1:12:35]
