What flows from our mouths and hands springs from this hidden aquifer. We judge others by visible fruit while our own roots dig deep in shadowed soil. God alone maps these underground rivers. Proverbs treats the heart as the core of a person, the place where words, actions, thoughts, and feelings all come from. Proverbs 4:23 calls the heart the spring of life, and Proverbs 27:19 says the heart reflects the man. The wise life cannot start with surface behavior, because the fruit always comes from the tree. The root has to be dealt with.

The heart is hidden, deceptive, and corrupt. Proverbs 14:10 shows that no stranger can fully share the bitterness or joy of another heart, because the heart is private and hard to see. Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful above all things, and Proverbs 14:12 warns that a way can seem right to a man while its end is death. The heart tells the story every sinner wants to hear: that the sinner is right, good, justified, and the standard.

The heart is also desperately wicked, not merely off track or in need of a few tips. Sin comes naturally because the well is poisoned at the source. God promises to cleanse, remove the heart of stone, give a heart of flesh, put his Spirit within his people, and cause them to walk in his statutes. Christ does more than forgive sins and change the papers at the courthouse. Christ unites his people to himself, puts the old self to death, raises them to new life, and gives regeneration, justification, sanctification, and finally glorification.

Romans 7 explains why the new heart still feels war. Paul delights in God’s law in his inner being, yet another law wages war in his members. The Christian life is not a vacation after conversion. The Christian life is a continual and irreconcilable war between flesh and Spirit. The Spirit makes the believer alive to what is good while putting the flesh to death.

God’s word, Christian community, and visible fruit help the believer know the heart. God’s word exposes the lies that feel true. Brothers and sisters help uncover blind spots. The fruit of the flesh shows what needs to die, and the fruit of the Spirit gives reason to rejoice.

The heart must also be guarded. Jesus says the heart follows treasure, so time, money, and capacity train the heart. Philippians calls the believer to behold what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable, because attention shapes desire. The church must pursue hearts by guarding and proclaiming the gospel, because only Christ can take out stone hearts and give hearts of flesh.

That's not what the wise life actually is. We actually need something much much deeper. We have to be made into an entirely different sort of person. Heart problems aren't discipline problems or method problems. The corruption is too deep for that. We need a new well. You need a new tree. We need a new heart.”
