39s
“``When you became a Christian, the war didn't end. The war began. We love rest in Christ. That call that Jesus says to come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden. But that does not mean good Christian life is easy. What that means is that you're safe. Once you're in Christ, you're safe. You don't have to worry about not being his anymore. It doesn't mean the Christian life is now easy. You've entered a war. In your flesh, the world and the devil all hate you or all at war and at odds against you living a life that glorifies and honors God.”
63s
“If you guys have been here for any time, you've probably heard me say this before. We are great judges of others and great lawyers for ourselves. Right? We can easily pick apart with the flaws in other people, but when it comes to ourselves, our heart starts defending, justifying this natural disposition. It loves to justify itself. And what makes us so susceptible to this deception and this deceitfulness of our heart is because the story that it tells us is the one we want to hear. The story that it tells us is that we're righteous, that we're good, that what we think and what we feel is right. And that's what every single one of us wants to be true. Right? We don't like to be wrong. We don't like to be corrected. We want to be the bar and the standard. And so we're so susceptible to these lies that our heart tells.”
40s
“And notice, God here addresses our walking, our living. Right? He wants us to walk in his ways, to obey his rules. But how does he get there? It's downstream from a new heart. It's downstream from this new spirit that's put within us. This is not a command. There's nothing here that the Lord says do this. It is all things that he is promising to do for his people. It's not another command to do right. It's a promise. I will make you new so that you will do right.”
44s
“So we don't need behavior modification. Right? We don't need to simply change the externals and white knuckle into some external conformity to the bare minimum of God's law. That's not enough. That's not what the wise life actually is. We actually need something much much deeper. We have to be made into an entirely different sort of person. Heart problems aren't discipline problems or method problems. The corruption is too deep for that. We need a new well. You need a new tree. We need a new heart.”
