Bible readingPsalm 24:1 (ESV)
The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.
Matthew 25:14–30 (ESV)
“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with bankers, and at my coming I should have received what is mine with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”
Observation questions- According to Psalm 24:1, what is the scope of God’s ownership over the world?
- How did the sermon define the difference between ownership and stewardship regarding the things we hold in our hands? [05:50]
- In the Parable of the Talents, the servant who received one talent hid it in the ground. What specific emotion did he say caused him to do this?
- The sermon described six stages of giving, moving from "infant" to "special grace." How was the "mature giver" stage described differently than the "adult" stage? [14:22]
Interpretation questions- The sermon suggests that finances are often the "clearest mirror" to a person's heart [09:19]. Why is money often a more difficult area to surrender to God's stewardship compared to other areas like time or talent?
- In the parable, the master is frustrated because the servant preserved what was given rather than multiplying it. How does the concept that "management is safe" but "faith takes risk" [20:15] change our understanding of what it means to be a "good steward"?
- The servant who buried his talent viewed the master as a "hard man." How does a distorted view of God’s character lead us to hide our gifts rather than invest them?
- We learned that stewardship is "responsibility without possession" [05:50]. How does this mindset shift change the way we handle loss or unexpected changes in our life circumstances?
Application questions- Everything we hold—whether a phone, a relationship, or a job—is not an accident but an assignment [01:54]. What is one specific thing "in your hand" right now that you have been treating as a possession, which you need to mentally re-label as a trust from God?
- God often waits to see how we handle small, less desirable spaces (like a tiny, worn-out cottage) before entrusting us with more [08:58]. Is there a frustrating situation or a "small" task in your life that you have been neglecting? How can you steward that specific space with more care and gratitude this week?
- We looked at a progression of generosity that moves from impulsive giving to calculated tithing, and eventually to sacrificial giving [11:07]. Without feeling shame, which stage best describes your current walk? What is one small, tangible step you could take to move toward the next level of trust?
- "Faith is spelled R-I-S-K" [19:22]. When was the last time your generosity or service to God actually "pinched" or required you to trust Him for the unseen? If it has been a while, what is a risk the Holy Spirit might be inviting you to take?
- The unfaithful servant buried his talent out of fear, but God desires multiplication [23:46]. Are you currently "managing" your life to prevent loss, or are you "faithing" your life to see Kingdom growth? Where do you need to stop playing defense and start playing offense?
- For those who are parents or mentors, the people under our care are God's property, and we are entrusted to raise them for His purposes [25:30]. How does remembering that your children (or those you lead) belong to God change the way you are handling a current conflict or worry regarding them?
