Hearing God's Whisper: Embracing Silence and Solitude
Summary
In our fast-paced world, many of us yearn to hear the voice of the Lord as clearly as the prophets of old or the disciples who walked with Jesus. While God may not speak audibly as often today, He has never ceased communicating with us. He speaks through His living Word and through prayer, which is a two-way conversation. The real question is not whether God speaks, but whether we are listening. We often expect God to speak through grand gestures or miraculous signs, but He frequently communicates through the ordinary, the quiet moments of life. This is exemplified in the story of Elijah, who heard God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper.
Our current sermon series, "Airplane Mode," emphasizes the importance of practicing spiritual disciplines like silence and solitude. These disciplines are crucial for hearing God's voice and aligning our hearts with His will. Silence and solitude are essential for direction, strength, renewal, and clarity in life. Jesus Himself modeled these practices, often retreating to solitary places to pray before making significant decisions, such as choosing His disciples. If Jesus, the perfect Son of God, needed these disciplines, how much more do we?
Silence and solitude also provide strength and comfort in times of grief. Jesus withdrew to a desolate place after hearing of John the Baptist's death, showing us that even He needed time alone to process grief. Similarly, Elijah found strength in solitude when he felt defeated. God provided for him through rest and sustenance, reminding us that in our lowest moments, we must allow God to renew our strength.
For renewal and rejuvenation, Jesus often rose early or stayed up late to pray, prioritizing spiritual alignment over physical rest. This teaches us that spiritual exhaustion is more detrimental than physical tiredness. Lastly, silence and solitude prepare us for clarity and readiness in new seasons of life. Before His crucifixion, Jesus sought solitude to pray and gain clarity about His mission.
To incorporate these practices into our lives, we can "divert daily," "withdraw weekly," and "abandon annually." These rhythms help us create space for God to speak and for us to listen. As we close, I invite you to sit in silence, bring your needs before the Lord, and ask Him to speak into your life.

Devotional
Day 1: God Speaks in the Ordinary
In our daily lives, we often look for God in the extraordinary, expecting grand gestures or miraculous signs. However, God frequently communicates through the ordinary, the quiet moments that we might overlook. The story of Elijah serves as a powerful reminder of this truth. Elijah did not hear God in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. This teaches us that God’s voice can be found in the stillness and simplicity of life. Are we creating space in our lives to hear His voice? Are we attentive to the gentle whisper of God, which often comes in the quiet and stillness? [03:23]
1 Kings 19:11-12 (ESV): "And he said, 'Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.' And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper."
Reflection: Think of a recent ordinary moment in your life. How might God have been speaking to you through it, and how can you be more attentive to His voice in similar moments today?
Day 2: Silence and Solitude for Direction
Jesus modeled the importance of silence and solitude for direction and guidance. Before making significant decisions, He spent time in prayer, aligning His heart with God's will. This practice is crucial for us as well. In a world filled with noise and distractions, taking time to seek God's direction in our decisions is vital. Silence and solitude allow us to quiet our minds and hearts, making space for God to speak and guide us. Are we taking time to seek God's direction in our decisions? [09:46]
Mark 1:35 (ESV): "And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed."
Reflection: Consider a decision you are currently facing. How can you incorporate silence and solitude into your decision-making process to seek God's guidance?
Day 3: Strength in Solitude
In times of grief and defeat, silence and solitude provide strength and comfort. Both Jesus and Elijah retreated to solitary places to process their emotions and receive God's strength. Jesus withdrew to a desolate place after hearing of John the Baptist's death, showing us that even He needed time alone to process grief. Similarly, Elijah found strength in solitude when he felt defeated. Are we allowing God to renew our strength in our lowest moments? [19:34]
Psalm 46:10 (ESV): "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
Reflection: Reflect on a recent moment of grief or defeat. How can you create space for solitude to allow God to renew your strength during such times?
Day 4: Renewal through Prayer
Jesus prioritized spiritual alignment over physical rest, often praying in solitude. This teaches us that spiritual exhaustion is more detrimental than physical tiredness. In our busy lives, setting aside time for spiritual renewal and growth is essential. Prayer in solitude allows us to align our hearts with God's will and find renewal in His presence. Are we setting aside time for spiritual renewal and growth? [25:19]
Isaiah 40:31 (ESV): "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
Reflection: Identify a specific time each day this week to dedicate to prayer and spiritual renewal. How can this practice help you prioritize spiritual alignment over physical rest?
Day 5: Clarity and Readiness
Silence and solitude prepare us for clarity and readiness in new seasons of life. Before His crucifixion, Jesus sought solitude to pray and gain clarity about His mission. This practice is essential for us as we face new challenges and transitions. Are we seeking God's clarity and readiness for the challenges ahead? Silence and solitude can help us gain the perspective and strength needed to navigate new seasons with confidence and faith. [28:06]
Habakkuk 2:1 (ESV): "I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint."
Reflection: Think about an upcoming change or challenge in your life. How can you use silence and solitude to seek God's clarity and readiness for this new season?
Quotes
1) "What about today, where God doesn't as often or frequently, speak audibly to us? It can happen, but it's far, far less frequently that we'll hear an audible voice from heaven. I think for many of us, that might freak us out a little bit. But God does still speak. In fact, he has never stopped speaking. And I would make a very bold, but I would say true statement if we look at Scripture. God speaks more now to us than he ever has in the past. God speaks through his word." [01:58] (39 seconds)
2) "The question is not, does God speak today? The question is, are you listening? Are you providing space in your life to hear God's voice speak? We often assume that God only speaks through these dynamic events or in these overly spiritual ways. Where it's only in these massively huge spiritual moments where God would speak to us. Or through signs and wonders, these coincidences that come together, and that's how God speaks. It's the only way, but in doing so, in assuming that that's the only way that God speaks, we often will mistake our own thoughts for God's voice. And at the same time, we'll miss God speaking through the small things in life." [03:23] (48 seconds)
3) "Silence and solitude before God are essential for direction, for strength, for renewal, and clarity in life. You might say that's a lot. I could have included more. But silence and solitude are essential before God for direction in life, for strength in our life, for renewal, and for clarity. We're going to break apart each and every one of these today as we look at scripture. I hope you have your Bibles with you. If you don't, that's okay. There's going to be a lot of flipping back and forth." [08:21] (29 seconds)
4) "Solitude provides the space to listen for God's direction. Before making important decisions, we need to align our heart with God's will. And so I ask you, when you're making a major decision in your life, when you have something coming up that you need to do, maybe it's related to your job, maybe it's related to how you're going to raise your kids, maybe it's related to a relationship, and you say, man, I just need some wisdom here. Are you actually taking some time to go into solitude, to pray, and to align your heart with God's will?" [11:45] (34 seconds)
5) "See, all too often when we want God to speak to us, we want his direction, but we aren't willing to wait. You might say, well, God doesn't need us to be quiet. God doesn't need us to be silent. God doesn't need us to have isolation. He's God. He could just speak. And if you're anything like me, you've been frustrated before when God, being God, doesn't just speak to you. Like, God, I have this major decision. Why won't you just tell me what to do? It's frustrating sometimes. I think it's frustrating because we as humans want things to be quick." [14:48] (36 seconds)
6) "Silence and solitude is essential for direction in our life. Next, let's examine how silence and solitude before God are essential for strength and comfort and grief. I don't have to tell you that grief is a part of life. If you've lived really any amount of time, you've probably had grief over something. Perhaps it's the loss of a loved one. Perhaps it's the loss of a job. Many, many things that can cause grief. Crushing weight of responsibility. Whatever it is, grief is something that there is no escaping of. We can try to avoid it. We can try to shove our grief to the side, but that's only going to make the problem worse." [16:54] (43 seconds)
7) "Silence and solitude are vital for dealing with grief. We can't run from it. We shouldn't try to avoid it. We should press into it. Get away from distractions. Go before the Lord. Give him our sorrow. Give him our grief. Another example, perhaps not one of loss. Maybe you're saying, I haven't lost anybody yet, but I feel defeated, and sometimes that defeat is crushing. We can look to Elijah, an Old Testament prophet. He had defeat in the wilderness, 1 Kings chapter 19, which is 4 through 8." [19:34] (39 seconds)
8) "I want to ask the question, in our lowest moments, are we allowing God to renew our strength? God provided the meal. God provides for us. The rest that we need. Far too often, we fill these wilderness moments, we could say, with things to distract us from actually getting alone with the Lord. We feel so defeated, so we just go on our phone and start scrolling. We feel so defeated, so we just decide to fill our time with meaningless things. Things that in the moment just make us go completely blank, not thinking. Those things don't actually renew us." [23:00] (40 seconds)
9) "Silence and solitude before God are essential for renewal and rejuvenation. Next, we see that they are essential for clarity and readiness. For clarity and readiness. I think often when we're going into a big season, we're going into something next. Maybe it's a new job. Maybe it's a new city that we're going to live in. Maybe some of you are about to have a child. Maybe you're about to get married. A big decision to have clarity stepping into that new season, to have readiness, to enter into it with excellence. We need to have time before the Lord." [26:45] (34 seconds)
10) "So as we reflect on solitude, as we reflect on this, I want you to evaluate your current practice of seeking silence and solitude. I want to give you a very practical way that you can put this into routines and rhythms throughout your daily life. I don't have a slide for it, but I want you to write this down to put it in your phone, put it somewhere. And it's this, to divert daily. To get away for a few minutes every day, whether it's five minutes, whether it's 20 minutes, an hour, whatever it is, divert daily. Get away before the Lord and sit with him. Sit in silence if you need to. Pray." [29:06] (39 seconds)
