Bible Reading
Luke 8:1-21 “Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: 'A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.' As he said these things, he called out, 'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.' And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, 'To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that "seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand." Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care then how you hear. For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.' Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, 'Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.' But he answered them, 'My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

[20:55]Genesis 3:1-24 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God actually say, "You shall not eat of any tree in the garden"?' And the woman said to the serpent, 'We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, "You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die."' But the serpent said to the woman, 'You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.' So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, 'Where are you?' And he said, 'I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.' He said, 'Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?' The man said, 'The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate.' Then the LORD God said to the woman, 'What is this that you have done?' The woman said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate.' The LORD God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.' To the woman he said, 'I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.' And to Adam he said, 'Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, "You shall not eat of it," cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.' The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the LORD God made for Adam and his wife garments of skins and clothed them. Then the LORD God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—' therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.”
[20:55]Observation questions
- In Luke 8:1–3, what do Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and the other women do in response to Jesus’ work in their lives? [16:40]
- What four kinds of soil does Jesus describe in the parable, and what happens to the seed in each one?
- In Luke 8:16–18, what images and warnings does Jesus use to explain why people should pay careful attention to God’s word? [22:32]
- When Jesus’ mother and brothers arrive in Luke 8:19–21, how does Jesus describe his true family? [28:59]
Interpretation questions
- Why does the parable place the focus on how the seed is received rather than on any weakness in the seed itself? What does this show about hearing Jesus’ word? [11:30]
- The rocky soil receives the word with joy but falls away in testing. What kinds of pressure or hardship can reveal whether someone’s faith has roots beyond an emotional experience? [13:46]
- The thorny soil is choked by worries, riches, and pleasures. Why can good or ordinary things—such as work, comfort, goals, or media—become spiritual thorns? [14:54]
- Jesus says that his true family hears God’s word and does it. How does this protect the church from treating obedience as a way to earn God’s love? [30:34]
Application questions
- Which kind of soil most honestly describes the group member’s current struggle: a hard and uninterested heart, shallow roots, or a divided heart crowded by thorns? What is one reason for bringing that honestly to Jesus in prayer? [19:29]
- What is currently taking the most “light, water, and nutrients” from time with Jesus—anxiety, career pressure, comfort, entertainment, social media, or something else? What small change could make room this week for reflection on God’s word? [15:12]
- When following Jesus becomes costly or inconvenient, what responses or escape routes are most tempting? How could holding on to a specific promise of the gospel help in that moment? [14:21]
- Jesus’ grace means that believers do not need to earn his love. Where is there a tendency to respond to sin by trying harder to prove worth rather than receiving forgiveness and turning back to Christ? [25:58]
- What is one next step of obedience that may involve forgiveness, confession, prayer, serving, or sharing the gospel? Who in the family of God could help pray and walk through that step? [32:37]
- Jesus brings very different people into one eternal family. How can this group become a place where people are safe to confess struggles, be reminded of the gospel, and be encouraged toward faithful obedience? [31:38]
