The Harvest Is Plentiful: Sent to Gather Souls

Matthew joins Jesus’ calling of the Twelve to the compassion that comes just before it. Jesus sees people not as an anonymous crowd but as individual lives carrying pain, fear, joy, shame, regret, and hope. The multitudes are weary, scattered, and “like sheep having no shepherd,” even when they may not realize it themselves. Christ sees what is going on underneath the Sunday face, and He knows the joy too.

Jesus calls the harvest plentiful because souls are ready to be brought to the Shepherd. The problem is not that God lacks a field. The problem is that laborers are few. Jesus tells His disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest for workers, then immediately calls those same disciples to become the workers they prayed for. Prayer can become the very place where God says, “You. Come here.” God often answers prayers for ministry by sending the one doing the praying.

Christ equips the people He calls. The Twelve receive authority over unclean spirits and sickness because their particular assignment requires it. God still heals, sometimes in ways that are clearly miraculous and sometimes through ordinary means such as doctors. Yet healing does not come on demand, and long affliction does not mean God has stopped being God. God can use weakness and infirmity to form Christ in a life, moving His people from glory to glory.

The Holy Spirit fills believers, leaving no spare room for fear that evil has ultimate access or authority. Christ gives different gifts to different people, whether service, teaching, evangelism, caring for middle schoolers, or work nobody sees. Ephesians calls believers to walk in the good works God has already prepared. The question is not whether every person has the same gift, but whether each person will seek and use the gift God has given.

The names of the Twelve show Christ building a strange and unlikely family. Simon the Zealot and Matthew the tax collector belonged on opposite sides of a deep political and personal divide, yet Jesus called both into the same inner circle. God puts people together to rub off rough edges and make them more like Christ.

The apostles’ costly witness gives weight to the resurrection. These ordinary men saw the risen Christ, ate with Him, touched Him, and then endured suffering rather than deny what they had seen. A lie does not usually hold together through torture, prison, and death. Jesus truly rose, and changed lives remain powerful testimony that the harvest is still big, white, and ready.
